Well, when the cataracts were removed and the lens were replaced LASIK was no longer needed. Your doctor knew that but was perfectly willing to take your money for essentially nothing (LASIK after cateract surgery) and you were equally happy to pay some part of 16k for nothing. Barnum is once again proved correct.

Took the plunge. 6 weeks ago. Eyes a little dry. Using Refresh Optive eye drops and taking Flax seed oil pills. Supposedly they help create tears.

Some concerns with night driving. Hate those damned LED headlights! So far so good. Hopefully things will take care of themselves soon.

Congrats!
Dryness and “night glare” visual symptoms can take 3-12 months to go away. Keep pumping those artificial tears in!
We prescribe Restasis for most of our post-LASIK patients. Ask your doctor about it if your dryness symptoms persist.
Best of luck! You made a great decision!!

How about non-prescription eye drops? Anything you’d suggest?
Should ad, I do use reading glasses. But better than having to wear glasses all the time.

There are many, many very good lubricating drops (”artificial tears”). Different patients like some better than others. We use Blink, Systane Ultra with most of our patients. But, there are plenty of other brands that people like. You can ask your doc for samples (these are getting harder to come by, thanks to your federal govt, by the way) and see how you do with them.

Congratulations on your decision. It will get better. I used eye drops for several months. I’ve learned that if I get tired, the eyes are less moist. Eye drops help me even with the night driving.

Aging makes you more nearsighted allegedly. Maybe if she lives long enough it will cancel out.

That is actually backwards. As you age you develop presbyopia which is an inability of the eye to adjust focus to near objects, so as you age you actually become more far-sighted. That's why older folks (even those with perfect vision) have to wear reading glasses.

I had Lasik in 1998 and I've been happy with it, but I still have to wear reading glasses because of my presbyopia. Also, as I age it turns out that my corneas tend to (as my opthamologist put it) sag which has led to developing some astigmatism.

I now wear progressive bifocals to read and for computer work, but I'm just fine without glasses for distant vision. Before lasik I was very near-sighted.

This surgery has been done for over 30 years

Lasik was approved by FDA in (I think) 1999. I had it done in 1998 before it was FDA approved...I was part of one of the last studies before approval.

The advice I saw earlier about choosing a surgeon who has done a lot of procedures is good advice. Mine had done over 900 procedures at the point I had mine done.

I believe it's called monovision or something like that.

Monovision is where they only do lasik on one eye. The idea is that you keep one eye near-sighted for reading and one eye normal for distance vision. Frankly I think it would drive me nuts, but a friend of mine had that done and likes it.

I already have dry eyes so that option would not be one I’d take....glasses and contacts it is for me.

http://www.usaeyes.org/faq/subjects/when.htm

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved the excimer laser for patients with mild to moderate nearsightedness in October 1995. The FDA approved the excimer laser to correct astigmatism in April 1997.

Which doesn’t change that corrective eye surgery has been done for decades.

BTW, this is the record for a late response to one of my posts. I made that post in May!

The thread popped up in recent posts and I didn’t notice the thread date until I had replied to several posts. I’m sure you are correct on the dates...I just remember that I had it in the late 90’s, less than a year after my dad died in 97, and that it was approved by FDA shortly after I had the surgery.

I had to go look! I use Systane, made by Alcon, but basically any OTC drops.

I had an aunt that had this done. Within two weeks she said her vision was like looking through a shattered glass. Within 2 years she was nearly blind and had to purchase a seeing eye dog. Unfortunately, she tripped over the damn dog in her bedroom and broke her hip, which eventually led to her death.

“That is actually backwards.” I don’t know what the hell I was thinking. I have been waiting for far-sightedness to cancel out my severe near-sightedness for decades now. With no luck.
