Do Any of You Freepers Suffer From Leg Cramps at Night?
Me | June 26, 2011 | RetSignman

If any of you suffer from leg cramps at night when you go to bed, I have something you can try. I know it works for me and it's a cheap remedy.

Buy a bath size of bar of Ivory Soap and put it under your fitted sheet near where your legs would be.

I know, it sounds crazy but IT WORKS. If you don't like that big lump by your legs, just take a knife, stand the bar of soap on edge and slice it in half or thinner, if you can.

I have read that some people with restless leg syndrome have been cured with this but I can't vouch for that but I can tell you that I no longer suffer from leg cramps.

Try it and post back if it works for you, ok?

Sleep well, Freepers.

BTW, there is no pain worse than getting a leg cramp while stretching your calves. YOW!
Uh, oh. I've never had that happen. I hope I never do.

MODERATORS: Please pull my post. I don’t want to harm people because if they try it and it helps them they may ignore more serious problems.

"Quinine and tonic water contains very little of it and pharmacy’s aren’t allowed to sell it anymore."

I've tried everything, including the bar of soap, and nothing worked until I found "Hyland's Leg Cramps with Quinine" pills online. They're $4.00 for 100 pills. I was having legs cramps nearly every night, and since finding the leg cramp illls, I haven't had a leg cramp in 6 months. You just dissolve two pills (completely tasteless) under your tongue. Do an online search for the pills. They're GREAT! BTW, all our local grocery stores sell tonic water with quinine too (in the drink mix section). Quinine is still around in small doses.

Funny. :) Maybe I'm parking the wrong drink by my bed.

I am really sorry abut that. It is a tough medication to tolerate. Unfortunately with everything I tried, it is the only thing that will get me to sleep and keep me asleep for 5 hours.

I spent a lot of time with my doctor going over the medications I take and how they react to each other. Melatonin is over the counter, supposed to to help you fall and stay asleep. Turns out I had the most problems with that.

Ambien has some tradeoffs for me. Then again, when you haven’t slept in almost 3 years anything that works is better than nothing.

If you get a leg cramp or charlie horse, roll your bottom lip outwards as hard as you can, it will make the cramp subside. Don't ask me how or why but it works, old Chinese remedy.

Had way too frequent intances of 'nocturnal leg cramping' and heard about this.

I Bought it, have used it, and it absolutely does work!

Try CoQ10, most who takes cholesterol lowering drugs have leg cramps. It is one of the most reported side effects.

Quality of your shoe fit also is important. Especially if you have high arches. Those $300 custom arches in my $180 Nike Air shoes are worth every dime I spent on them. As I have Peripheral Neuropathy, (non diabetic)...the fatty tissue in my feet is disolving and pressing on the nerves.

Peripheral Neuropathy can also cause foot and leg pain.

And do get your potassium level checked out.

Please don’t have ‘em pull this thread.
There’s loads of links for other things I want to read about, but can’t until I get home from work (Friggin’ work PCs block them).

MY problem is cramping in the morning, just before I get up. I’m semi-asleep and I have the urge to stretch. If I do that, I will end up with a leg cramp that blasts me out of bed like space shuttle booster rocket.

I have used a small pillow to the same effect, (a) if I manage to fall asleep while lying flat on my back and (b) if I stay that way until I wake up.

If I can't fall asleep while lying flat on my back, or if I do but toss and turn in the night, to where the lump under the sheet is no longer in the same position relative to my legs, then it does not work; at least I think it doesn't.

The problem is that even though I do suffer from leg cramps at night, it is a sometimes thing and seldom recurring night-after-night in a long string of nights. So, sometimes, when I try a new solution, which I have from time to time, the “good” night could just be one of those nights that was going to be good anyway. I can never be sure.

Most likely, you are simply dehydrated. Drink more water. Since most people are deficient in magnesium, that might be part of the problem. The body’s true Mg levels will not show up in a blood test, so it’s very safe to supplement with 400mg of magnesium glycinate or magnesium citrate... do not use magnesium oxide. As for potassium deficiency, that might be the culprit, but it’s much easier to drink more water and to supplement with Mg.
