Best of luck to you 2DV!

Get an mp3 player for the walking. I download Rush or Levin’s podcasts and they get me an extra 20 minutes easy because the time passes so fast.

As for the carbs, if you have to eat them try to stick with rice as it’s gluten-free.I began gluten free a month ago and am absolutely shocked at how fast the inches came off and my energy went up like crazy.

You can do this!

Your local hospital should have a program on diabetic nutrition. It’s amazing how many foods we think of as ‘good’ for us that are not good for diabetics. I.e., fruit juice. So very high in sugar. Better off eating a whole apple. Are you monitoring your blood sugar ever morning and night?

Don’t let this frighten you beyond its being a wake up call. Do whatcha gotta do. We need you with us. For us and especially for yourself and your wife.

Hey, you do yeoman work here posting good threads and commentary and so, we need you healthy.
The daily walking is a great idea. Also, supplements would likely help if you don’t already take them.

1. Ester-C (caps)
2. B-Complex (caps)
3. Fish oil (gel caps - get ‘Nature’s Bounty’ brand, trust me on this)
4. Co-Enzyme Q10 (gel caps)
5. D (these are tiny gel caps)
6. Raw bee pollen (a big spoonful per day)
7. Low-dose (81) Bayer aspirin (take one before bed)

The above regimen is amazing. Best taken at lunch or earlier.
Take the fish oil three times daily, spread out.
Also, whenever your left arm goes numb and you have shortness of breath, chew (literally) on a couple of regular Bayer aspirins. I always keep some handy. Works every time.

I, freeper Lancey Howard, guarantee that the above will improve your health.

Exercise is very important. That doesn’t have to mean an aggressive workout once a day. Light exercise throughout the day is probably better. I got a set of bicycle pedals that sit on the floor for exercising our legs, or we can put it on the table and use it for our arms. I paid too much for ours at a medical supply store, but I’ve since found them at Walmart. It has velcro so I can strap my husband’s feet or hands to it. The stroke left his right side paralyzed, so these pedals allow him to exercise. They work great for me with my health issues. Move your arms and legs whenever you think of it. Breathe deeply whenever you think of it. Your strength will pick up, and before you know it you’ll be active and feeling better. God bless you.

You can do this! Several years ago my blood pressure was really high (doc put me on meds) and my blood sugar was borderline diabetic. I quit drinking soda’s and started walking 5 miles a week. As of today, I am no longer on blood pressure meds, my blood pressure & sugar are normal and I have lost 30 pounds.

Good Luck!

Yes, get walking and eat right. You can really just avoid sugar and you’ll feel better immediately. Take care of yourself for your wife and kids, you know? They love you and need you more than ever.

Good for you! Yes it can be done. I have, more than once. (Were it not for beer and friends I wouldn’t have to keep doing this!)

Walking every day did it for me, it made all the numbers better. But, once you get to the point your Dr. is happy, don’t stop - daily exercise has to become a central part of your life.

Best of luck.

Hubby had worse numbers than this after robotic prostrate surgery. Poached egg and oatmeal for breakfast, salad and 3 times aweek fish for lunch, and very light supper. Lifted weights in garage. Dropped 30 lbs and great numbers now.

Hi, vet, can I write ya a wall of text on this subject?

During the spring of my 38th year, I had an episode of vomiting that lasted for 8 hours. The effort of it was so great that the sheer stress of it almost took me out. After no food for some 9 hours, the ambulance attendant tested my blood sugar at 440. It was offical, I’m a diabetic.

Ok, I’ve seen what happens to diabetics. I don’t want to be cut away one piece at a time. I couldn’t continue to live as I had been. I am originally from New Orleans, and I loves me some good food. So, I started to work on my diet, eating much less. From that episode of intractable nausea, the awful hospital food, and my desire not to die, I began to eat much less.

Basically, I was eating a can of soup for breakfast, PB&J for lunch, and a balanced, healthy dinner. Now being on diabetic drugs, I found my inquenchable thirst was much less, so I quit drinking 2 liters of soda per day, and I quit drinking one gallon of milk per day (I was that thirsty, all day, everyday). Also started blood pressure meds at this time.

Was doing well, things seemed fine until 3 days after my 39th birthday, at which time I suffered a heart attack on a trip to New Orleans. Luckily, I got to Oschner Hospital, where I spent 5 days. My right coronary artery was 100% blocked, discovered during a catheter angiogram. It was drilled and stented at this time. Sprung a leak in my femoral artery a day after that, fun stuff, but still here.

The efforts I had made to turn around my diabetes was too little, too late for my heart. Poor choices and eating whatever I like ganged up on me very fast. So here I was, not even 40, almost dead. I was so weak, I could not walk even one block with my dog. I began to suffer panic attacks at this time, because, quite frankly, I thought I was gonna have a massive 2nd heart attack and die, which is how my dad died at 62. Had to take some vallium at this time because the panic was sheer terror.

How do I turn this situation around, I asked myself. Can’t take vallium too long, or I’ll have yet another health problem I don’t want. The answer, walking.

I continued to walk my dog outside my house as far as I could each day. Then I got braver, thought I’d head down this near hill, because if one goes down a hill, one also has to come back up to get home. This was great exercise. So I kept at it, walked further every time I could, till I found an even steeper hill. I said to myself, one day, I’ll walk up this hill too. And so I did.

Then one of those days, I realized that somehow, I can run instead of walk. So me and my buddy, Grainger the dog, would walk down the hills, and then we would double time the flat parts. My panic began to fade, because if I could do this so soon after having a heart attack, then perhaps I’m not going to die like my dad did. Then one day, I found the will to run up the hills back home, not walk ‘em, but run ‘em. How could this even be possible, a fat bastard like me who never ran a day in his life now running up hills?

No more vallium needed, confidence was high.

Today, Im still doing all of those things, about 2 months from my 40th birthday now. This past 10 months is the time the Lord gave me extra, the time to improve myself, one more chance, and so I did. Aside from my running up hills, I’m lifting weights now for upper body. Not needed for lower, because my legs would now put the governator to shame :D I’m also looking to buy a kayak so I can exercise and enjoy the beauty of nature around here. I feel strong, damn strong, like I did when I was 21 and studying martial arts.

So I am continuing with a low calorie, 3 meal a day diet with heavy calorie spending each day in the form of exercise. I had wondered how the hell am I gonna keep running up hills in the middle of summer in florida...well, I eat that heat, gimmie 100% humidity, can’t stop me, if a heart attack didn’t, neither will the climate!

What I learned from knocking on death’s door at such a young age, is that I have to have to have to take this bull by the horns and lead it where I want it. No one else can do it but me. I do not want to die, I do not want my chest cut open, I do not want bypass surgery, I don’t want my fingers cut off, or my feet, and I don’t want to be blind. I want to live like a man, healthy and strong.

I will never let myself become soft again, so help me God.

We must do this as men, vet, even when we dont’t want to, even if we are feeling lazy on a day. We must push ourselves to the limits and then beyond.

If I die running up a hill in the sweltering heat of Florida, then I died trying to live better than I was before, and I can be proud of that.

Start walking, vet, go go go! You will be astounded where your body can take you, I know I was.

Good luck and good health to you, Sir.

Having gone thru a triple bypass, it's odd how boot camp motivation forty years gone steps up from some forgotten foot locker.
When I'm in the middle of a cardiac stress test, (Which makes me glad I quit smoking.), there is still that small voice saying "One more for the Corps..."

Keep humpin'

First get your testosterone checked.

No that is not a dig or a bad joke. Low T can cause high blood pressure and high sugar. If you have low T you will lose muscle and gain fat even if you are trying to work out.

Walking is good. Get good walking shoes. Go to a store like "The Walking Company" and get yourself properly fit. A stationary bike in your home is good as well. If you have knee or back problems get a recumbent bike.

Do not multi-task when it comes to meals. Do not watch TV, serf the net, drive, work or do anything but eat. Talking to your spouse is ok :)

Eat meals that require a knife and fork.

Water is good for you.

Foods that you have to chew are good. The closer to raw your food is the less fuel you will be getting out of it. Not aways a good thing but for you necessary right now.

Prayer's Up. After taking care of my Dad for 5 years after his stroke, my health was also not so hot. My first goal was to loose 10% of my weight and keep it off. Which I did.

Even so my blood pressure was often 140/100 even though I was taking medication. Rather than take an additional medication, I decided to change my diet to include those foods that have been proved to lower blood pressure.

I limit those carbs that are without nutritional value. Three carbs that I included every day during the winter were potatoes, bananas, and beans. All high in potassium and fiber with research to show they reduce blood pressure.

Another biggie was no more soda not even diet. 2-4 oz of fruit juice with no sodium club soda, helped me kick the habit. No added salt, but lots of herbs when cooking. I took up gardening to get the freshest possible produce with no worries about E Coli or pesticides.(good exercise too)

I also made sure to include 5-7 veggies per day. Calcium and vitamin D are very necessary to good health. I included 4 or 5 serving of dairy(mostly no fat) which gave me enough protein that I could restrict meat and reduce saturated fat. I also eat 1 oz of nuts(1/2 almonds & 1/2 walnuts)daily.

At last month's checkup, my blood pressure was 114/64,(had not been below 130/88 for 15 years) cholesterol was good, and triglycerides reduced. Now I will tweak the diet to include some more foods known to lower triglycerides, and raise HDL. Then I will work on more weight loss too.

I tell you this to let you know it can be done. One of the books I used was “The Doctor's Book of Food Remedies”. It has foods and ailments listed in alphabetical order.
