Listen to her radio show. While she does want real cuts, she is not completely against raising the debt limit and she is well aware of the politics of this situation. She even said we should not attack McConnell over his "plan B".
This is about politics as much as it is doing something right for the country for a change. If Obama ends up looking like the reasonable person here he will win the PR war which would force the Republicans to cave anyway.
I'm sorry, but people are just deluding themselves if they believe the country is really in favor of cutting much of anything. Americans are for that in theory - till the very moment ANY social program actually isn't funded and the crying welfare recipients are on TV claiming they are starving to death. The majority of the public will DEMAND those programs get funded again. Heck, the public will probably demand a deal if so much as public parks are closed for very long.
Bottom line, things are going to have to get a lot worse before what passes for the American public these days are really willing to make serious cuts and begin curtailing the social welfare state. This debt ceiling debate is simply about positioning for the 2012 elections and I expect nothing major to come out of it.
