They dont call it the Copper Country for no reason.

In the Caledonia mine, they dug out a mass that weighed in at about 27 tons. You can still go up there and hunt for pure copper nuggets laying around on top of the ground. Divers have come back and said they saw massive outcroppings underwater in the big lake.

In gold, the michigan mine, was said to have produced the highest per ton to ounce ratio in history. It pinched out fast and they closed to mine. Yet nobody has ever bothered to drill test holes to see if they got it all.

Copper was definitely king. I’ve even read that copper miners were allowed to keep the small amounts of gold they found because it was really little more than trash that got in the way of the real money.

Hi, crz.

The estimated weight was 760 tons, and it took the miners a year to cut it up, lift it to the surface and ship it out.

It’s believed that the copper mass discovered at the Central mine in the Keweenaw Peninsula in 1854 weighed more than 1,000 tons.

Who knows?

I have pictures of pure copper pillars - 75-feet wide and 100-feet tall - holding up stopes in the Keweenaw mines.

What’s tons among friends? Always enjoy talking to Yoopers. Keep the pasties warm and save one for me. God bless you all.

I don't mean to be flippant, but they ought to get these guys gold mining in Alaska from the show "Gold Rush" up to the UP to bring some visibility to it.

I don't know something from Shinola, but my gut tells me where their is salt ( under Detroit ) other minerals are not far behind, Ergo their is oil under Lake Michigan, the whole State maybe under Shale Gas, and the UP may have all these rare metals.

Granholm didn't do a ******* thing to make any of these things happen to put people to work and potentially fill the state coffers...

And Nerd boy is on my "S-List" because he ain't far behind her, not a word about going after these G-d given riches that could help us out of the fiscal mess we are in....

I got to tell ya, Nerd boy Snyder is becoming a big dissapointment fast....

There are old legends about huge amounts of gold stored away in an unknown cave by Indians in northern Wisconsin. Maybe some of it came from Michigan or there is gold up there in N Wis too.
