It would be interesting to know just what kind of fat they used in the tests. Not all fats are alike, not all are metaboized in the same way, and polyunsaturated fatty acids are very negative in their effect on the body, whereas the human body requires cholesterol for numerous essential functions, like cell repair and construction, formation of hormones, etc.

This study is wrong. Possibly because mice are made to eat grain.

If you want to get rid of your type 2 diabetes, eat NO grains, no sugar, and low glycemic fruit (berries, etc) sparingly as dessert only. NO fake sugars at all either. Boom, your diabetes will be gone. And after the first week your cravings for these things will be gone.

Feast on healthy fats - good quality meats, cheeses, eggs with butter. Lots of veggies and you can put butter on them too! Coconut oil, a handful of nuts each day. Salads with virgin olive oil and vinegar. Full fat milk and yogurt (low and nonfat is pure sugar).

You CAN do it. Grains are pure sugar in your body. For fiber use veggies and ground flax seed. Drink kefir and eat fermented foods for probiotics. Take a high quality fish oil supplement — the ones at drug and grocery stores are mostly very poor. Nordic naturals is a good brand. Spend the money. Dont eat crap from china.

Fat does not cause diabetes, sugar does.

I have Type II Diabetes and I agree with you. When I eat bread, starchy vegetables and "low fat" diet foods - my blood sugar levels go up. I am following a diet such as you describe and they are now going down. My joints have stopped hurting and I am losing weight.

Also, since I've stopped consuming artificial sweeteners, I can tell that my memory is improving.

This whole "low fat" meme is just plain wrong.

Amen. The war on fat still rages and thats not to say there aren’t bad fats. The polyunsaturates are the bad guys and they’re everywhere. Almost every processed food contains them in the form of the vegetable oils. OTOH I think coconut oil is one of the healthiest foods on the planet.

“Fat does not cause diabetes, sugar does.”

Exactly! Simple carbs, white flour, sugar, HFCS and all that stuff that they put into everything to make it taste better because they took all the FAT out!!
I am hypoglycemic and I avoid all GRAIN and I won’t buy anything that says “low or no fat”. It’s kind of funny....everything is now low fat or no fat and people are more obese now than ever!! I follow a paleo or primal diet meaning meat, good fats and vegetables! I am never hungry and I have been able to keep my blood sugar level. Not to mention that I finally lost the weight that I had been trying to lose on a “low fat” diet! I feel great!

Concur mostly but I have a question.

What do you include in fake sugars?

Is stevia allowed?

Cheers!

I've wondered that myself, since it is a plant, would it be considered a natural sweetener?

What does one substitute for bread in the diet you describe?

I think decimon has posted studies that also refute this one.

Okay, I’m going on memory here, but, for example, I think we had a post on how a HIGH high-fat (GOOD fats) diet for 6-8 weeks practically reversed kidney failure.

My husband and I used to eat “health food”; i.e., low-fat, fat-free, low-cal, sugar-free foods. After I had our son I did a lot of research, which stemmed from our son being whey protein intolerant. Turns out that I just couldn't eat whey protein for about the first six months, but I made the mistake of switching to soy-based products. After much research, we went on a new diet. Whole milk not skim or soy, natural peanut butter not low-fat, sugar not sugar subs, real sour cream not fat-free, real half-and-half not fat-free, butter not margarine, etc. Not only are we able to maintain our weight with just exercise and eat what we want, but the arthritis that I was diagnosed with in my feet when I was 18 has disappeared! What we do avoid is MSG (dad was hospitalized from exposure to it!), sugar subs, HFCS, and hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils.

My in-laws constantly struggle with weight and are losing the battle in spite of all the walking that they do. Their fridge is filled with sugar-free juices, diet sodas, low-cal dressings, and many other “healthy” items. The pantry is the same way.

Maybe. Much too much has been assumed in some of the comments in this thread.

I'm on a low to no carb diet as well. I use portabella mushroom caps as burger buns.

Some interesting comments on arthritis and joint pain. After a bout of hepatitis I had some problems including joints too easily hurt and too slow to heal. I went on a low carb diet and lost the joint pain in addition to a lot of weight.

I have wondered what the deal with stevia is. I haven't had a chance to research it yet. This issue with sweeteners is twofold: fake sweeteners still can spike blood sugar levels and they can be very unhealthy for us. Also, remember that “natural” is not always a good thing. Sugar is all natural. A rattlesnake bite is also all natural. I remember when Splenda came out and was touted as just like sugar! Turns out it's not as good for us as the commercials claimed. Stevia does have a natural origin, but I don't know what processing it undergoes to get to the store shelves. I think, I'm not positive, that chlorine was used as part of the processing for Splenda.

Tha’s pretty much my family’s experience. I stopped all grains and immediately stopped going nearly comatose after meals. Lost twenty pounds.

Yep. My grandparents lived to be in their nineties on the natural diet you described, plenty of lard, bacon, butter, whole milk - balanced with lots of homegrown vegetables.

They did eat homemade jellies, grains, pies and cakes, but it wasn’t doctored up with HFCS & de-germed/bleached flour or hydrogenated fats. I never saw them drink soda pop - opting for iced tea made with real cane sugar. Of course they worked hard too, rarely did I see them sitting on the couch watching TV.
