Nittany is the name of a mountain (big hill) range near the Penn State campus. The Nittany (Ninnaly to Barack Obama fans) Lion is a mountain lion rather than a Detroit Lions (toothless) style lion.
Coach Joe Paterno runs an austere football program. The team just wears its practice uniforms game day.
