The actor and director, who played the Fonz in the classic US sitcom, said it was "humbling" to receive the honour, awarded at the British embassy in Washington DC.
Having been diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult, Winkler has toured schools in Britain over the last two years to talk about the learning difficulty.
He has also written books for children about Hank Zipzer, a boy with dyslexia, whose experiences are based on the actor's own childhood struggles.
In a statement on the embassy's website, Winkler said: "Receiving this honour is a very humbling experience.
"My goal when I started working with children was never to bring accolades on myself, but instead to change how people think about those around them for whom learning is a struggle.

Heyy...
Does he straighten out the kids the same way he straightened out the juke box?
Cool-a-mundo!
That’s great what he did for the kids, but he and Ron Howard are diehard Obama supporters.
Here’s a 2008 Howard (”Richie Cunningham”) and Wrinkler (”the Fonz”) tv ad of them endorsing Obama and his Marxist “Change” agenda.
warning: If you’re a fan of the Andy Griffith and Happy Days tv shows this will surely sicken you, Wrinker also takes a cheap shot at Sarah Palin.

I think you meant, “Yyyeh.”
I know Winkler is a hardcore Obama supporter but this is a classic case of a situation where an actor's politics shouldn't matter. Winkler is a nice guy who does a lot of charity work. I've never heard any interview where he attacks conservatives or gets too preachy.
I think it’s nice that he was able to make millions before he realized he had dyslexia.
I’ve had Dyslexia for my entire life. I do not consider it a handicap at all. In fact, I like it and consider it an asset. How may people without this ability can read a book in a mirror? Leonardo DaVinci must have been Dyslexic; he wrote his important scientific notes in mirror image.
knarf oversits.
Other than that, I wish Mr. Winkler well. He semms like an otherwise decent person, but all three of them owe us an apology.

Interesting. I was under the impression that US citizens could not receive a MBE (Knighthood). Is he now Sir Fonz? :0)
Sir Arthur Fonzarelli to you, knave.
It's honorary, not a knighthood (so it isn't Sir Fonz), and only members of government are prevented from receiving foreign awards without Congressional approval.
It seems it’s an OBE (Officer), rather than the lower MBE (Member)
MBE and OBE are not knighthoods.
Steven Spielberg was awarded the KBE, which is basically a knighthood (Knight of the British Empire) but doesn’t allow him to refer to himself as Sir Steven because he’s not British or from the Commonwealth
