Word For The Day, Thursday, Rocktober 13, 2011 - nihilism
dictionaries ad nauseam | 13 October 2011 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 10/13/2011 4:06:31 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

ni·hil·ism [nahy-uh-liz-uhm, nee-] noun

1. total rejection of established laws and institutions.
2. anarchy, terrorism, or other revolutionary activity.
3. total and absolute destructiveness, especially toward the world at large and including oneself: the power-mad nihilism that marked Hitler's last years.
4. Philosophy
a. an extreme form of skepticism: the denial of all real existence or the possibility of an objective basis for truth.
b. nothingness or nonexistence.
5. ( sometimes initial capital letter ) the principles of a Russian revolutionary group, active in the latter half of the 19th century, holding that existing social and political institutions must be destroyed in order to clear the way for a new state of society and employing extreme measures, including terrorism and assassination.
6. annihilation of the self, or the individual consciousness, especially as an aspect of mystical experience.

Example sentence:
Occupy (your city here) is nothing more than an exercise in nihilism by slacker progressives.

Etymology:
1810–20; Latin nihil nothing (variant of nihilum; see nil) + -ism

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

The most leftward lefties choose nihilism
Free-market destruction, no capitalism

Just take from the rich
And give to the poor

But under their system
No one’s rich any more

The Wall Street Protesters think that their nihilism is something unique to their generation. However, the nihilistic anarchist was a stock character in most 19th century Russian Novels.

Bunny Lebowski: Blow on them.
The Dude: You want me to blow on your toes?
Bunny Lebowski: I can't blow that far.
The Dude: [looks at man lazing in the pool] Are you sure he won't mind?
Bunny Lebowski: Uli doesn't care about anything. He's a Nihilist.
The Dude: Ah, that must be exhausting.

I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.

Speaking of which, if the dialog “Nucky, you’re out of your element” ever comes out of my TV on Sunday nights, I will squee like a little girl.

(Ever seen “Bored to Death” on HBO? They just started new episodes this week.)

Is that the show Ted Danson just started on? To answer you, no, we haven't gotten into that show - is it good?

I'm loving Boardwalk though -

No, it’s the show Danson has been on. This is the third season. It’s about a guy who is a writer, but in the throes of writer’s block after his first novel decided to advertise on craigs list as an “unlicensed detective.” Danson plays a magazine editor/mentor/friend and Zack Galifinakis plays his pot smoking best friend/comic book artist.

They get into capers. It’s very film noir-ish/40s detective stories. Not bust-a-gut funny, but amusing.

Just take from the rich

And give to the poor

A more accurate reading of what they are saying would be:

Just take from the rich

And give to me.

I often have to deal with therapeutic nihilists. People who totally reject traditional medicines principles and insist on doing it their own way.

Crosby wearing a black helmet at practice has twitterdom in a complete UPROAR over him potentially returning for tonight’s game. It does mean he’s cleared for contact, but not necessarily that he will play tonight, but it does make it more fun to think about tonight’s game. Malkin is also skating and could potentially play, apparently, despite that eastern european proneness to some ingrown toenail or other soreness that kept him out of the last few.

I have owned a few in my lifetime, but after I broke my ankle when my daughter was a baby I just couldn’t wear heals that high anymore. I”m much more comfortable in a wedge but even a 2” heel is fine - much more than that and my ankle screams in pain!

I saw a video on TMZ (I think) the other night showing various singers on stage falling off their shoes - lady gaga had the most falls they showed but some were really horrible accidents - Beyonce fell down a flight of stairs, seemingly face down - in one shot, Katy Perry couldn’t get up, she kept slipping and a band member was trying to help her - it was funny but kind of hard to watch at the same time

Many OWS-ies are practicing nihilism,
Though they think it is actually idealism.
Most should learn to behave,
Grab a shower & shave-
And take in a big dose of stark realism.
