Not sure about Gears of War, but a quick search at Amazon shows only 360 for all three versions. As far as Halo goes; Halo: Combat Evolved (first game) and Halo 2 are XBox, everything after Halo 2 is 360 only.
they were fixing them even outside of warrenty due to a defect with the originals. I believe that issue is resolved.
It would not change my recomendation to buy the xbox.

Actually, I have found it odd that you would buy a video game and processor when a perfectly good (possibly great) rifle can be had for a lot less money.

Many, many hours of fun practicing shooting the zombies in the head at the rifle range. And then you can teach him to reload with about 60 bucks of equipment.
(just a note to parents to pass on to their children. AK-47s are much more accurate in the video games than they are in real life.)
The PS3 is by far the superior system technologically.
It is also the system with far more well rounded game types available. Go ahead, I challenge any XBOX fan to name me 1, just 1 platformer of note for the the system? A system now in its 6th year.. and still no platformer??
That said however, the 360 does have a bigger installed base, and as such, his friends are far more likely to have a 360 than a PS3.
The 360 however is basically a game system for First Person Shooters and Driving Simulators. And in my mind, no young child should be playing a realistic first person shooter go read the studies of the effects of simply changing the targets from being bullseyes to human shape did to soldiers in WWI and tell me than young children should be playing those sorts of games. XBOX live integration is seemless, and its a solid system, NOW.. though typical microsoft released it with problems, then denied them for years, only to finally admit it far too late. Latest editions do not have the problems of earlier systems.
End of the day, if you are buying a system for your child to play with his friends on, you are basically going to have to go with whatever system his friends tend to have. If he is the only guy in his peer group with a PS3, he’s SOL to play online with his friends, same is true if he’s the only one with a XBOX360.
I wanted at PS3 when I decided to get my son a better game system a few years ago, alas his friends were all 360 owners, so he got a 360.
Oh, one more thing for the PS3, it is also a Blue Ray player, so if you don’t already have a Blue Ray, you can use that as a cost justification too. Blue Ray 75-200.. PS3 $250.

They just released an anniversary re-edition of the first Halo CE game for the 360, my son and I just played the whole thing through and its absolutely awesome, better graphics, sounds and more dialogue. Also extras can be found as well during the game. It was like playing a whole new game in some ways and running it on the latest 360 gave it better campaign mode performance.
It was selling for $39.97 or so at Walmart.

I had more fun with a 10 year old upgraded game than the Gears of War 3 that just came out, it was good but entirely too predictable.
We got a Wii last year and use it very infrequently. I’ve been trying to decide between PS3 and Xbox myself. I know there is a new XBox being debuted in 2012 and available later in the year. I am leaning towards PS3 because my brother prefers it (he has both) and has dozens of games I could borrow. I’ve got elementary school aged kids and he thinks the PS3 game “Big World Little Planet” (or something like that) is just great for them.
Ask the kid.
I’m leaning toward X-Box. There are several flavors. What do you suggest? Is the basic with 4 gig too basic? Should I got with the system with 250 gig?
What do you think of the Kinect?
OR should I wait a year since it sounds like a big upgrade is coming in 2012? Thoughts and opinions welcome. Thank you.
Not that well versed in the systems. My teenager has the 250, but claims you can use flash drives to save games on the 4 GB if needed.
I have an Xbox 360 with a 120 GB hard drive. A big hard drive is important if you want to download a bunch of things (which I do), otherwise the 4 GB one is just fine. It never hurts to have extra space, though, IMO. As for Kinect, I haven’t seen any particularly good games for it (but a lot of bad ones). Until there’s some worth while game/reason for it, the Kinect is a waste of money. Just my opinion, though
I have probably bought a dozen Xbox consoles over the last ten years, the early 360 models were very bad about overheating but they figured that out and the newest ones have a better processor, I think the latest is the Jasper, don’t buy an older one even if its been rebuilt.
I say this like how I would like to get a Kindle pad, the new color one...BUT I am waiting a couple of months, new startups always have glitches and issues, the latest 360 is now a real veteran. You can buy a 4gig unit and have no issues unless you start downloading the games, music and a whole lot of other stuff, then you will wish you had the 250gig harddrive.
The Kinect will only mate up with the latest 360 units, or you can buy it with a 360 but ideally you really only need the 360 with the 250g, don’t get the Arcade version, I did and my son WAS able to install the older hardrive but thats what he did, I still cannot figure how. He cracked open the unit and plugged it in, also had to open the removable hard drive unit. Better to get the Elite version I think its called, it uses a removable hard drive. The Arcade I think is only internal.
The Kinect is in its infancy, not a lot of games just yet but if you have the space it is really fun, and I think the games for it will flood in soon. No reason to wait for the next 360 or 720 or whatever, even if and when it does come out I would still observe any flaws for about six months.
Its winter, kids will be shut in if its bad outside and Xbox has a lot of really good games. Get one now, 4gig if you really don’t think you will be downloading, mine is 4 gig and its almost maxed out. My son has all sorts of content on it, his awards and credits and all the data from the games he has played so he can access any point or level.

We had a left over hard drive so I bought the 4 gig model, but 4 gig is not enough memory by itself. 250 gigs is probably overkill but I don’t know if they have any choices in between.
I can’t tell you much about the Kinect other than there is going to be one under the tree this year. My younger son has talked about wanting one, my older boy hasn’t mentioned wanting one, he hated the Wii, so I suspect he won’t care for the Kinect much.
As far as new models coming out, it’s hard to say, I suspect that nothing will change until Christmas next year and even then, I suspect they will wait until 2013 if the Kinect increases sales enough.
I don’t honestly know, most ppl know the hardware they went with or have researched what they’d like, which is why I said ask the kid.
We can argue points here back and forth all day and potentially add information like “this model has a high failure rate” or “that one can be upgraded for cheaper than buying the model that comes with it”, but if there are any big concerns, the person who’d be getting it likely knows em.
As for the HD - the real advantage to the hard drive is being able to install the game from the disc. With the Xbox you can run the game from the disc without installing (so little, or NO hard drive is needed) but the disc drive is noisy and load times are slower. If you copy the disc to the HD the disc must still be in the drive, but it is not used since the console runs it from the HD. Also, if you are connected to the Internet then you may want to download games from Xbox live and those will of course go onto the HD.
Kinect? I don't like it, but most “serious” gamers don't. It is for casual gamers, and party settings. Think of it this way, Microsoft developed it because of the Wii market. They were going after that crowd which btw was never inclined to buy ps OR Xbox. Again, look at the games designed for it. If they look like what you want, then go for it, but anytime you see a game that says it also uses or adds Kinect but it is optional, what that means is that it is mostly just a gimmick and few people really use it. Microsoft sunk $$ into it so they are determined to develop for it even if it's core users don't want it!
