Vanity: Home music system advice wanted!
Today | Me

Posted on 12/11/2011 11:58:50 AM PST by narses

I have, like many people, a lot of music in my iTunes and MP3 / CD collection. What are good choices for getting the music in multiple rooms with wireless speakers from either one computer or maybe a home server?

I am looking for all ideas, hardware, software, speakers, websites, articles - bring it on!

(I am on a limited budget, so value based ideas are a real plus!)

First I have heard of it. I am thinking my 8 track collection may be dated. Sigh. Getting old is a bear.

If you're playing MP3 audio, go cheap. You'll never notice the difference.

If you're playing CDs and Records, wire the house with a GOOD, at least 10 gauge twisted strand speaker wire and buy high-end speakers like Polk Audio or similar.

You WILL hear the difference.

MP3, you'll never know...

talk to a general contractor in your area - he is likely to be able to turn you on to a media guy in your area who will know exactly what you need.

This is actually one of my secondary projects in my programming hopper right now - I want something that I can use as an alarm clock that will pipe music to a bedroom at an appointed time, and handle music throughout the house... not to mention piping movies/inet content to whichever tv I care to use, among other things... So I am writing my own. BUT, being a secondary and complicated project, I don’t expect it to be ready anytime soon.

Check X10 website for re-transmitters. If you have good wifi, use Apple Airport, or TV or other product. They will let you transmit to another amp/speaker set, or another TV

Squeezebox.

Well developed open source streaming software for wired or wireless lan. Very high quality audio. Have used for years. See: http://forums.slimdevices.com/ Also click on 'Products' at the top of the page.

A good place to get an overview is their Wiki at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Main_Page

Players are now sold by Logitech who bought Slimdevices and can also be found on EBay.

Well, for maximum quality of the music listening experience I was going to mention tube amps... Don't think that is gonna fly here. I won't even mention my preference of my turntable over CD player...

You really should check out CD players with vacuum tube LOGIC. Now if they could just get it a little smaller than the size of a large house...
