Request for assistance for HP color laser printer (vanity)
self | December 12, 2011 | Neil E. Wright

Greetings computer guru FReepers,

In 2009, my sister bought, new, an HP CLJ9500MFP color laser printer/copier. Over the past 2 years things were going along well. Until about a week ago.

Last week, she started getting an error "REPLACE TRANSFER KIT" and the printer would not print the jobs she tried sending to it. Now the Transfer Kit is supposed to be good for 200,000 copies, and she has only printed somewhere in the neighborhood of 20,000 copies.

When she checks the available supplies for the toner and transfer kit, the printer shows that 94% is still available on the life of the transfer kit. When she emailed tech support at HP, she was told that it was a known hardware problem and they could fix it if she brought it in and paid them some outrageous fee for the fix. Or, she could obtain the latest firmware update and it would fix the problem. She downloaded the latest firmware update for that printer and I coached her through installing it via the phone. The firmware update went well and she tried the printer again.

Once again, the error "REPLACE TRANSFER KIT" appeared. I started researching the HP forums to try to find the fix, and I found this post (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Printing-Questions/Transfer-kit/m-p/214381/highlight/true#M13029) to the customer support forum from January 28, 2010, with what sounds like the same problem. TO THIS DATE, almost TWO YEARS later, HP has not responded to that request for assistance.

I found another thread on the HP forum discussing reseting the TRANSFER KIT counter. In that thread they discussed where to find the PIN required to access the "service" menu. I downloaded the 500+ page service manual (http://www.s-manuals.com/manuals/printer/hp/hp_color_laserjet_9500_service_manual.pdf) hoping to find the PIN and instructions on how to reset the counter.

NOWHERE in the downloaded service manual does it say how to reset the counter, and does not show a PIN.

In the email to her, she was directed to this page on their website: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=120&prodSeriesId=212667&prodTypeId=18972&objectID=bpl12842. That page tells one what supplies go with the printer, and where to order them. It is WORTHLESS in fixing the problem.

Now, given that HP has been selling equipment with KNOWN hardware problems, one would think a reputable company would offer to FIX THE PROBLEM for those people who gave them several thousands of dollars, without charging them any more. But I suppose that is a discussion for another time.

I would like to know if anyone is familiar with HP color laser printers, and might be able to give me a fix so my sister can print on the color laser printer again.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

When I had an issue with my HP laptop, the customer service lady said it was out of warranty, said if I paid $100 she would try to fix it remotely and if she couldn’t she would refund the money.

She couldn’t and she didn’t.

I will never give HP another cent

I threw my HP printer away. HP has a nasty habit of dating ink cartridges and if the cartridge is out of date, but would work, and has ink, the printer refuses.

Thank Carley, and mark HP off of your approved vendors list, and re-list them under the 'ohhellno' list.

Sorry. But that's the only solution I see.

I've also delisted Linksys from my approved vendors list.

Sad when formerly good companies get stupid and go bad.

A Canon Inkjet I had in the late 90s was that way. Once I had to replace the ink, the thing never did work right. The printhead kept jamming.

Next, I bought a Lexmark Inkjet. I ran 20 pages. It jammed and the printhead quit moving at all. Of course, that was just days after it was out of warranty (90 day warranty).

About 2004, I ran across a Minolta laser printer (B/W) [Cyber Monday special for $100]. It is still working. I don’t print much at home, but I have never had a problem with it.

About 3 years ago, I ran across a Xerox color laser printer [Cyber Monday special for $150]. I have never had a problem with it.

Yep, HP is migrating out of our network as well. Same kind of problems.

Have the owner shut it down for an hour until the board memory is cleared of all messages. Have them unplug the printer for fifteen minutes more after turning it off. Then have them plug it back in and start it up. See if that helps clear the message board. Also, if they get the message again have them press and hold the green check button for 4 seconds, but only after you’ve gone through the first steps.

You might give a look here. They don't list that specific model but the 9500 series.

I will NEVER buy another HP product either.

I have a computer that has extra drie bays that are weldd shut. I had to snap off the plastic in front to access the CDROM drive

My new HP Printer that I got as a replacement for the last POS that broke shakkes like it is going to knock itself apart.

The copies are terrible and the printer disconects every time i turn off my computer- i have to DELETE it and then ADD ANOTHER PRINTER in order to use it, every time

HP sux hard

I think HP puts time bombs into everything they manufacture. After the warrantee expires, the device fails. We went through several PCs, and all the peripheral devices before we figured that out. The last three HP computers we had crashed due to the killwind.exe file. HP preloaded the PCs with that virus. I don’t know if it was on the previous computers, but it probably was, and it was probably the reason those PCs crashed too. We couldn’t remove the file. Every time I tried to delete it or uninstall the backweb agent related to it, it replicated itself into random folders throughout the hard drive. The more we tried to remove it, the more aggressively it multiplied. We tried formatting the hard drives, but it replicated itself onto the restoration discs. Norton recognized it as a virus, but was unable to remove it or even quarantine it. Every time we tried to remove it or quarantine it, the computer shut off, and when we turned it back on there were more copies of the file. We had purchased both of the last two computers within a couple months of each other. We purchased an extended warrantee for both, and they both crashed right after the warrantee expired.

HP sux.

I had to buy a Vista machine a while back, and the three-year-old HP printer would not work. No driver. I went to their website for a driver, and it said there would be no driver for Vista, my solution would be to buy a new HP printer.

Guess what two letters of that advice I rejected?

The toner cartridges and transfer kits that come with a new laser printer do not print nearly as many pages as the replacement ones (usually only about 15%). If they did, it would double the cost of the printer. You can reset the page count as shown in 6SJ7’s post, but you will not get anywhere near 200,000 copies.

Try updating the printers firmware.

Your printer has a built in web Admin.
If it is attached to a network enter the printers ip address
in your computers browser.
Navigate to settings, Configure device, resets, reset supplies
and select new fuser kit and then click apply.

Your sister is lucky she got 20,000 and two years off her HP color laser printer. I only got one year and about 150 copies off mine and then it had to be junked. Fortunately, I bought the warranty at Best Buy and it was replaced with another brand of printer. I paid $180 for the printer and the replacement printer cost $79. It’s been fine, but it’s only been about a year and maybe 100 copies.

Oh, my printers were ink jets, but it’s probably same difference. I have found with HP if you buy the expensive printers you’re much better off. My printer at the office cost $600 and it’s a champ but it’s not color either.

Thanks for that advise. She had shut down the printer several times, but didn’t unplug it. She unplugged it and then plugged it back in and restarted it. It appears to be working again. She asked me to say “Thank you”.

She downloaded the latest firmware update for that printer and I coached her through installing it via the phone. The firmware update went well and she tried the printer again.

We tried that. Didn't do the job. But thanks for the suggestion.

I'll go with those who say "HP SUX".
