The MBTA dispatcher who added some unauthorized holiday cheer to Park Street Station by programming the message boards to display the lyrics to Deck the Halls will likely receive the Ts most modest form of discipline when he returns to work this afternoon.
While I appreciate what they were trying to do, well just remind the employee that in the future well expect that hell resist the temptation to use the signs in that way, state Secretary of Transportation Richard A. Davey said in an interview this morning.
The unnamed employee has become a hero on Twitter since the Globe broke the story, reporting that the T would likely discipline the dispatcher. An MBTA spokesman had said he would face a written warning, suspension, or termination, depending on a review of his past record.
That prompted an informal petition and scores of tweets from people calling for the employee to be given a pass or even recognition for his bit of rogue sign programming, in what some on Twitter had dubbed the FaLaLaCaper and falalalalagate.
The signs are there for important reasons, safety information, customer information, Davey said, explaining that a rigid policy is needed to ensure that employees do not post distracting, inflammatory, or irrelevant information on the LED message boards that hang above subway platforms.
Davey said the employee is a long-term employee and a good employee.
Davey told a television station and The Boston Globe this morning that the employee would not be punished. But another transportation official clarified later that Davey meant that no serious punishment would be levied, and a light reprimand was still likely.
Theres no malice here, just the employee trying to do the right thing, Davey said. But well ask him not to do it in the future.

Fortunately, he’s into light discipline...
If only we had a seperation of state and stupidity law. But, alas, we do not just as we DO NOT have anything regarding seperation of church and state....

Next year Christmas falls on a Tue. (a day later than you’d expect due to leap year day). Will the MBTA Director and
other higher-ups be working on Dec. 25 next year...wait,
they’re OFF? For “Christmas”? But...I thought there was a separation of Church and state... :) (Ask a teacher who
objects to religion-and-the-state whether they’d be willing to come to work next Dec. 25 for a “conference day” or not...)
