Last year, fireworks were blamed for the deaths of thousands of birds. It wasn't immediately clear if year-end celebrations are again to blame.

Probably farmers spreading poison to kill off blackbirds at this exact time of year. Blackbirds are voracious grain eaters and if you kill of the mature birds at this time of year, there are less of the flying rats to breed in two or three months. Simple.
