Two people who murdered a man and dismembered his body after they were unable to burn it in a bid to cover up their crime have each been jailed for 22 years.
Margaret Heeley and Mark Anthony Postles, both of Flamborough Road, Thurnby Lodge, Leicestershire, beat John Cogan unconscious with a walking stick before fatally stabbing him in the throat.
Nottingham Crown Court heard that as he lay dying on a sofa they played him the Elvis Presley song Don't Cry Daddy.
Sentencing the pair to life imprisonment to serve a minimum of 22 years, Mr Justice Flaux told them: "A chilling aspect of this case is that as he was dying you played his favourite Elvis song.
"In my judgment there was an element of mockery in this."
He added: "Nothing can excuse the savagery and inhumanity of your attack on Mr Cogan."
During the two-week week murder trial the jury heard how Postles, 47, and Heeley, 56, invited Mr Cogan round for a drink on the evening of March 11 last year before getting into an argument and attacking him.
The judge said the motive for the attack was still unclear - the court heard that Heeley accused 49-year-old Mr Cogan of raping her but it was not substantiated and was an allegation Postles said he did not believe.
The defendants, who had each been drinking heavily prior to the incident, tried to blame the other for the attack and the 20 wounds Mr Cogan sustained.
After beating Mr Cogan and delivering the fatal stab wound to his jugular vein, Postles and Heeley kept his body in an outhouse and doused it in bleach to reduce any smell before trying to bury him in the back garden of Postles' home.
When they found the ground too hard to dig a grave deep enough, they tried to set Mr Cogan's body alight but found the bleach prevented his corpse from burning properly.
Using a saw and hacksaw, they amputated Mr Cogan's left arm and both his legs and made a failed attempt to decapitate him.
It was only when Heeley was unable to cope with what she had done and confessed to friends and family, followed by the police, that the killing was revealed.
Mr Cogan's body was discovered in the garden shortly after 9pm on March 24.
The judge told them both: "You clearly participated in this killing and its gruesome aftermath together.
"The depravity is almost beyond belief."
Neither defendant showed any emotion as they were sentenced and led from the dock of the court to the cells.
If they watched Tarantino, they would have played “Stuck In the Middle With You”, instead.

Tommy DeVito: Hey, what do you like, the leg or the wing, Henry? Or ya still go for the old hearts and lungs?

Passerbys mistakenly thought he was preparing for a colonoscopy.
-——The pair, who were both jobless alcoholics, kept the body in Postles’ outhouse and made a failed attempt to burn it. They then waited two weeks until Postles got his benefit money to buy saws and knives to dismember the corpse.
Another failure of the British welfare state. Where didn’t socialized medicine cure their addiction and mental illness?

Ms. Heeley is one old-looking 56. I’ve seen women in their early 80s who looked much better.
