HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (WSVN) -- The family of a dog shot by police is glad their pet survived, but the father is concerned after officers opened fire so close to his son.
The Jones' family dog "Baxter" is recovering but can barely move after being shot several times.
Friday night, Pembroke Pines Police were called out to the Jones' house along Southwest 171st Terrace after reports that Baxter was on the loose.
Thirteen-year-old Cameron Jones witnessed everything as police arrived. "When I got outside they said, 'Get your dog or we are going to shoot him,'" said Cameron. "They gave me two seconds and shot him six times."
The family immediately rushed Baxter to an animal hospital. "It just felt like a movie, I was so traumatized. It didn't feel right that they shot him six times," said Cameron.
Paul Jones, Cameron's father, said, what worries him is that the entire incident happened in front of his teenager. "My biggest concern is that six shots were fired 17 feet from my son," he said. "Only three landed in the dog. Did the officer have my son's safety in mind?"
Police said Baxter bit one of the officer's ankles, forcing them to fire. But a neighbor called that story doubtful. "I said, 'Show me the bite marks.' He said, 'Well, I am not going to let a dog bite the officer and then shoot.' I said, 'OK, well then you're changing the story,'" said the neighbor.
Cameron said he is happy his dog survived.
Paul hopes other families do not have to go through this experience, especially young family members. "I want that this doesn't happen to another family," he said. "My son is traumatized."
The Pembroke Pines Police Department said they do not have a comment at this time.

These local police doing things like this are just digging their own graves, figuratively speaking. One day, they will need good citizens for help, and there will be none who would give them the time of day. I know I sure as hell wouldn’t(I’ve already reached that point).

These cops need some more range time, but I am glad the dog survived.
It takes six rounds to kill a dog that (supposedly, apparently not though) bit his ankle? And then, only three of those rounds actually hit the dog. Sounds like a small (maybe medium) dog. It takes a big man to shoot a pet.
IIRC, shooting a police dog carries a very heavy sentence. Maybe pet dogs should be worth more in similar instances. I don’t know how I’d react if anyone, including a cop, was about to shoot my dog and I had a gun in my hand.

If you’re confident that your police force tries to protect and serve, you’re fortunate, no matter how well or poorly they do. I have only anecdotal “evidence,” and not much of this (because it has proven real hard to get), but I believe that many police chiefs, including the chiefs of most large cities, are members of the Progressive Police Chiefs of America. Some chiefs may not know what they’re tied to; some may honestly believe that they protect and serve best by “keeping the peace” “under control.” Some know that their bosses are Marxists: control uber alles.

Now, this sounds like it may have been unreasonable.
The dog looks like an Australian Shepherd.
I can only see it right now (based on article) IF the dog was biting. But even then, a dog on the ankle surrounded by a few officers might be able to be grabbed without shooting.
As the dad said in so many words, the son may have been endangered for no real good reason.
If he didn’t bite - what was the complaint that required shooting? Just that he was loose? No word about any insane behavior from the dog before they got there.

They are treading awfully close to where the citizenry is going to start using them for the same type of practice they are using dogs for...
The shooter(s) *could* be “innocent and misguided,” but I’d bet he/she/they were trying for control through intimidation. Which would mean that they think their duty is to control. The Tucson sheriff’s SWAT team that fired seventy-one rounds at and into one lone citizen took control by intimidation to its ultimate end. The question is, “What should we do to counter the tactic?” Thanks for the update, irritating as I find it.
