I was almost 5 when I fractured my skull, and I was NOT a happy camper during my hospital stay! (Your reference to her as “Baby Ava” leads me to believe she a lot younger — and therefore the situation would be even more confusing for her.)

Is she old enough to understand things received for special occasions?

In situations like this, I’m a believer in the carrot-and-stick method. Promise her a treat at the end of each walk or other unpleasant therapy. It isn’t spoiling a child to promise a popsickle, sticker, or stuffed animal at the end of each difficult task. (X # of stickers = big prize!) I believe it teaches goal setting.
