This is one of my pet peeves. For years Gilroy, California was The Garlic Capital of the World. And now all the garlic I see at the supermarket is imported from China. Why? I refuse to buy it, and will search until I find native garlic. Even if it costs more, I don’t care. I’m not buying garlic that’s been shipped halfway around the world in the hold of some tramp steamer from the totalitarian country with the largest remaining Gulag on earth.

Just now sliced up a whole lime shipped in from California. Poured in some diet soda (one I use regularly), and it was a whole 'nuther experience.

Remind me to bring in some fresh lemons as soon as possible ~ I love to eat them with a garnish of turnip greens.

Sadly, there are no more tramp steamers in the world.
Garlic is shipped on modern efficient container ships.
California garlic goes mostly to dried and processed because of efficient use of machinery versus human handling
of the fresh.

Garlic is very easy to grow in the home garden and almost becomes weed like if you try to get rid of it:)
Plant in the fall with the larger cloves to get larger cloved plants.

Gilroy is still the garlic capital of the world, and you can still get it. The imported garlic is of inferior quality. Chefs actually say you need more to get the same level of flavor.
