The dynamics may be more interesting this season, what with the Doctor being officially married to River Song, while chasing around Time and Space with Ms Hottie.

If they have to have a boy friend for Ms Hottie I would love it to be an actual Alpha. Someone who would actually be a challenge for the smug self assurance of the Doctor. Bring up the whole morality of altitude issue where the Doctor who won't use a gun because killing is immoral, has repeatedly destroyed whole worlds. The Doctor has no problem sending others with guns to do the killing (Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart), but refuses to get his hands dirty.

If the producers want to deal with tough morality issues that would be the one. Is the pacifist who refuses to fight but sends others out to kill for them actually moral? Who is more moral, the the blood covered guy who kills with a knife, who kills only those he intends, or the guy who wastes entire worlds from a sterile control room, and never sees any of the people he destroys?

As an example of this, the Fires of Pompeii episode has him deciding that incinerating thousands of men, women, and children was acceptable collateral damage in order to get the Pyroviles. And blowing up Vesuvius is necessary because the Doctor is too pure to use weapons. He does this a lot: guns are very bad, so lets blow them up instead. He thinks like a Leftist (or at least his script-writers do).

They sort of touched on that in that episode with Davros, but then there was a distraction before the Doctor had a chance to really wrestle with it.
