Today, American serial killers rarely get past three or four victims before they are caught.
Law enforcement cooperation, public awareness, the Internet, a shared criminal database, surveillance cameras, electronic transactions, cell phones, DNA, etc.....
A repeat violent criminal needs a lot of luck to stay out of jail these days.
If only that were true.
The arrest rate for murder in general is hovering around 62% - that means almost 40% of the time, no one gets arrested for the crime. That's not even looking at what happens when the case gets into the court system.
Despite what you see on TV, stranger murders are extremely rare and often, with no connection, no one gets arrested.
