BAY CITY — A Bangor Township man who police said yelled racial slurs outside a Bay City bar has accepted a plea deal, and he may avoid jail if he writes a convincing report on Muslims' cultural contributions.
Delane D. Bell, 25, earlier this month pleaded no contest to a two-year felony count of ethnic intimidation. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss misdemeanor counts of assault and battery and malicious destruction of property between $200 and $1,000.
A no contest plea is not an admission of guilty but is treated as such for purposes of sentencing. Bell's attorney, Bruce K. Mannikko, previously said his client didn't recollect the incident for which he was charged.
Court records indicate prosecutors are recommending a delayed jail term. After hearing Bell's plea, Bay County Circuit Judge Joseph K. Sheeran amended his bond to require that he write a 10-page report on "the greatest accomplishments of Muslims."

From whose point of view?
The story is a little unclear about what all went into the felony count. The guy also had misdemeanor assault and vandalism charges against him, now dropped. In other words, does the “ethnic intimidation” charge include the fact that he attacked the two guys, or is he actually facing a felony merely for being a loudmouthed idiot?
I’m not a big hate crime fan anyway, but the latter of the two scenarios is a *lot* scarier. Being offensive and stupid (calling an Indian Osama Bin Laden???), shouldn’t be a crime. Threatening someone with violence, or causing harm or damage to persons or property, yes. Being an idiot, no.

What I would ask the judge in this case is, how many Nobel Prizes for science and medicine have the Moslems won? How many have the Jews won?
How many names prominent in high cultural arts are Jewish?
How many are Moslem?
And, even more importantly, what is the ratio of the number of award winning Jews in the arts and sciences to their population? And what is that ratio among the Moslems?
Clearly, the Moslems will come out BIG losers in this comparison every time.

Ethnic intimidation is a crime now? I’m half Japanese and my best friend is white, we regularly exchange racial slurs over beers, (all in good fun of course)so I guess we’d better stay out of Michigan. :P

This drunken punk needed arresting, but his assigned paper should have been “Why I shouldn’t get drunk and assault strangers and kick their car doors”.
