Forget the day spa: How hunting and fishing trips have become the new retreats of choice for women
Mail Online ^ | 3/22/2012 | AP

Erika Faulk and her cousin, Gale Robinson, could have met up for a weekend spa retreat or planned a shopping excursion, but the two middle-aged, suburban moms opted for weekend learning to shoot guns, build campfires and track deer deep in the Ocala National Forest. Faulk, Robinson and about 100 other women were taking part in a three-day workshop called 'Becoming an Outdoors-Woman'. The program began two decades ago in Wisconsin and has spread to 40 states and Canada as a way to teach women the skills needed to enjoy outdoor activities.

I know, I know.....y'all hope they don't go hunting at the same time of their monthly

I don’t care when they go hunting...it may be the women that make the men of the future since so many dads are always absent. The white boys are acting a lot like the brothers when it comes to notching the belt these days.

A couple thoughts:

First, this is great because it puts the lie to the liberal notion that women are supposed to be some monolithic voting block that only cares about traditional “womens” issues.

Secondly, such activities tend to reinforce conservative values and self sufficiency and not depending on the government for support.

only if you let them run free on the streets like hoodlums
both mothers and fathers, black or white, need to RAISE their kids. Give them some moral code....what ever happened to parenting?

It's because many women are simply becoming men. At my upscale gym it's bizarre to see attractive 20ish women taking boxing lessons. Personally I believe it's disgusting.

Hubby can go hunting and fishing without me. I would rather get feet and nails done.

“... it’s because many women are simply becoming men”.

I disagree. I can shoot (never been hunting though) and fish a great deal. I am not masculine by any means. Hunting, fishing, camping etc... gets you outdoors and you enjoy nature. Plus, I can bake/broil/fry any fish that I catch (and clean it as well). I don’t find this masculine but just another part of who I am.

My grand daughter is a brown belt, but she still is a girl. I guess she needs it to protect her girly-man boyfriend? Maybe society is switching rolls, or maybe its a throwback to pioneer women. I think it is great idea, we could use more women like Palin out there.

“what ever happened to parenting?”

They left it up to the schools and the government is giving the parents and most teachers exactly what they didn’t want.

“the women in our family would agree with you!”

What is sort of funny in my situation is my Dad taught me to fish. I was raised with three brothers who never really liked it. I inherited his fishing poles and I am the only sibling that still fishes. I taught my son and two daughters to fish as well and they love it. My husband would tell you that I fish better than him simply because I enjoy it more and show more patience with it. Nothing wrong with women finding an activity to enjoy by themselves or with their families. Especially when that activity puts meat on the table (fish or crabs in a pot!)

“... with all the reports of abuse, it may be a good idea”.

My daughter took two years of Krav Maga. As a parent, I knew as she got older... she would be out in the world and may need to know self defense. It is a way of protecting her. There will be times in her life when she is alone, walking in a parking lot or driving by herself. The women at the gym come from different backgrounds but none of them could be described as “boyish” or “masculine”. Today’s woman HAS to know that bad things can happen to them... crime, abuse, etc... and to prepare themselves is common sense. IMHO.

What a sexist thing to say! Sounds like a personal problem. What's the matter....do you feel threatened by them? Do they outbox you?

Did it ever occur to you that they're doing that so that they can learn to protect themselves? We are NOT all interested in becoming men but conservative women tend to want to be self-sufficient.

The patriarch of the family is still taking a shot at a deer now and again at 89. The younger members of the family are avid hunters & fishermen. I have two nieces who grew up climbing in a deer stand with their dad from about 8 yrs on, starting using a gun at 12, are crack shots (on a college sporting clays team) & not too shabby with a bow - one is now teaching an archery program to archery instructors (her wedding favors were made out of empty shotgun shells if that tells you something!). We all eat lots of fish and rarely buy beef - the freezer is full of venison. The family that hunts & fishes together is a lucky family indeed. :-)

“The family that hunts and fishes together is a lucky family indeed”.

They are also the family who can provide for themselves. Your nieces sound so cool! Plus, your one niece is now an instructor... providing education to others AND bringing in some money for the family (or providing for herself).
