Fred Couples, bidding to become the oldest champion in major golf history at age 52, fired a five-under par 67 on Friday to share the clubhouse lead during the second round of the 76th Masters.
But World No. 2 Rory McIlroy and two stars without a major title, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood, were only one stroke off the pace and among a host of challengers as the final groups made their way around Augusta National.
Couples, who won his only major title 20 years ago at the Masters, stood atop the leaderboard alongside fellow American Jason Dufner, last year's PGA Championship runner-up, at five-under par 139 for 36 holes.
"It was a very, very magical day," Couples said. "I'm going to be right there with everybody on the weekend."

ABT - ANYBODY BUT TIGER ...
Just heard it after he put the ball WAY right on 16. That'll teach ya - cheaters never win.
My source (I am cube-bound) tells me Tiger is cursing all over the place and kicking his clubs around. Hope he makes the cut....I like watching Tiger lose it.
Announcers are having to apologize to viewers for Tiger’s foul mouth.
I never did that playing Golf;)
Go Freddy Go!
Saw the club-kicking incident. I've done worse - back in the day. Wouldn't do it now, though.
Yeah, I agree. I can’t watch much of the Golf Channel because they can’t go a minute without talking about Woods, and most of it is gushing. It’s at the point now where they are worshiping Woods and making apologies for him at every turn. Disgusting that they don’t have the stones to be even a bit critical. Cowards.
The media have always loves the bad boy. It gives them something to go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on andon and on and on and on and on and on and on and on andon and on and on and on about.
I just hear the name and I turn the station.
He won two weeks ago, and played great. He’s hacking it this week though. Anybody hitting it the way he has would miss the cut without his recovery skills. I admit I pull for him to hit it off the hosel on every shot.
His actions are a disgrace to the game.
Got that right - I took my 9 year-old Godson to the US Open a few years ago [cost $200 for us to get in]. 'Course my Godson wanted to follow Tiger around, so we did ...
Tiger was f'ing up all day - and cursing a blue streak. I talked to a US Open Official about it and he didn't care ...
I then pointed out that I had spent $200 bucks of my hard-earned money - and I expected that the players would act as gentlemen and professionals [especially in front of children] ...
I then told the US Open Official that I would NEVER come to a PGA event again unless the players [read Tiger] cleaned up their act ...
