If the six consecutive national championships weren't enough proof of just how good the SEC has become over the last few years, the first round of the 2012 NFL draft should have provided enough evidence to clinch the case.
A draft-high nine players from the SEC were selected in the first round of the 2012 draft, including four players in the top 10. Trent Richardson, Morris Claiborne, Mark Barron, Stephon Gilmore, Fletcher Cox, Michael Brockers, Dre Kirkpatrick, Melvin Ingram and Dont'a Hightower were all selected Thursday night.
It is the sixth consecutive season that the SEC has had more than one player taken in the first seven picks and the 10th time in the last 15 years that an SEC player has been selected in the top three.
What is the foundation of the conference? Defense, of course.
That was proven Thursday night in New York City.
Eight of the nine players selected in Thursday's first round were on the defensive side of the ball, headlined by former LSU defensive back Morris Claiborne, who was selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the No. 6 pick.
Alabama, LSU and South Carolina finished as the top three defenses in the nation in 2012, and those three teams combined to put seven defensive players in the first round of Thursday's draft.
The SEC had eight of the first 18 picks. According to ESPN Stats and Info, that is the most any conference has had in the first 18 picks in the history of the NFL draft.
This comes on the heels of the 2011 NFL draft, which saw 10 SEC players go in the first round and a total of 38 for the entire draft.
SEC dominance isn't only measured in titles. It's also measured in the NFL draft.
ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, it’s a TEN..if you wanna count the Aggies QB
WAR EAGLE!
And congrats SEC. Is it 8 crystal ball trophies out of 15?
Jaguars
thanks.
And USC, the real one in LA, still leads with the most 1st round picks by far.
The Dawgs Defense is loaded this year.
The Offense is still young.
GO GAMECOCKS!!
But they are new to geography.
North Carolina?
And where is Mizzou?
We Trojans still wonder why Jarvis couldn’t play for USC. What kind of a medical condition could it have been, the kid is a monster? Would look much better in Cardinal and Gold.
Fight ON!!
People slammed Arkansas when they moved, too. As a Hog and
SEC fan I’m happy the Aggies are coming. Give’s me an SEC school within driving distance to root for. Except when they play Arkansas.
Did you hear about the man who was going to raise chickens? He wrote a letter to Texas A&M telling them he had planted the chickens six inches deep and they had all died. A&M wrote back and said “Send us a soil sample.”
Kiffen - thankfully, for whatever reason, he didn’t click with the kid.
Jarvis is incredible, he is a big time leader and he is a D. Good Dawg. He could have gone pro this year and maybe have been a first rounder, but he said early on that he was coming back because he has unfinished business, loves the dawgs and college life and I think he felt incredible love for our coaches for giving him a chance. His decision helped several others decide to stay.
I sure am glad that if we win the National Championship, our team won’t have to go visit with Obama. I would hate to see that Dawg eater drooling all over UGA (or Russ).
That’s great to hear about Jarvis. Not sure about the Kiffen angle (heresy in the SEC, I know) because we have had a few kids with “medical” issues that were just not released to play. Jarvis is a stud, and not allowing Armstead to play this year cost us his 5* brother who ended up at Oregon. Armstead couldn’t play for USC but could try out for the pros. I think our legal staff must be pretty gun shy for some reason.
