"Battleship" Avoids U.S. Release and Makes $170 Mil Around the World

UPDATE: Sunday, April 29th: “Battleship” is now up to $170 Mil worldwide without US release until May 18th.

“Battleship,” Universal Pictures’ big summer entertainment, cost over $200 million to make. You know it’s cheesy and not very good, so why subject the studio to American reviews? Very wisely, Universal has been opening “Battleship” around the world in advance of its May 18th U.S. landing. And the result: already $129 million in the bank. And more to come. These numbers are from Boxofficemojo.com. And they tell you why Ron Meyer is so good at his job running the studio. The movie has terrible reviews–it’s scored a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. One British reviewer simply called it “trash.” Universal calls it “money” and there will enough of it by May 18th to avoid a “John Carter” disaster. This is the new trend. If your movie is bad, play for it people who just need to see explosions and special effects. The movie stars non-actor Rihanna, and “John Carter” hero Taylor Kitsch.

No kidding. When I saw the trailer for Battleship, I assumed that it was a really elaborate hoax and parody. For heaven’s sake, there are no operational battleships any more and there have not been for 20 years.

At the event I attended, director Peter Berg, told the story about his dad being a Naval historian. He was taken to all the Navy museums as a kid and learned to have great respect for the Navy and those who served. He always wanted to make a movie about a battleship. This may be cheesy, but after seeing extended previews, I am looking forward to seeing it.

I can just imagine the dialog in the movie..

Captain: “What did the Russkies just say.”

Petty Officer: “Sir, they said ‘E-1’”

Captain: “WE’RE DOOMED!”

“John Carter” looked great - and the action was intense if not very suspenseful because of how invincible they made John. But the plot and duologue suffered from a SEVERE lack of Edgar Rice Burroughs magic.

I knew as soon as I heard that the plot was “confusing” that they had taken a major departure.

Amusing that something written almost one hundred years ago is STILL too cutting age, racy, anti-organized religion, anti-Communist, and violent to put on the silver screen as written.

What the hell would they have done with “Gods of Mars”?

For myself, I would like to cast Oprah Winfrey as “Isus” and see John Carter throw her to the crowd that once worshiped her as a goddess - now howling for her blood!

THAT would have been glorious!

What they would have done with it would have been a travesty!

I taught my liberal cousin how to play battleship on paper when were kids.

Dad taught me and my brother to play "battleship" using graph paper.

When we found out later that folks were paying good money for a plastic game set with lots of little parts that inevitably got lost, we were astounded. It seemed a colossal waste.

Does it break is one of the things I’m looking for in reviews. A lot of the apple slicers had that complaint, broke quick.

When a typical night at the movies is going to cost you $50, you can’t get upset if folks are going to be more discerning about what they spend their money on, especially when that same movie will be available to rent for a few bucks in 3-6 months.

You can’t charge the kind of prices that movies charge and think folks aren’t going to listen to word of mouth/reviews.

Its just that simple.

If a trip to the movies for 2 was $20, movie popcorn, soda etc, I guarantee folks would be less obsessed with what others said, but when you are dropping $50 for 1.5 hours of entertainment when you figure in movie, popcorn, drink etc.. folks are going be far less likely to try something they’ve heard bad things about.

Its standard economics... an app selling for .99 will get folks to try it even if it has a bad review or two.. one selling for 9.99.. not so much.

I can see if maybe you thought the two hours was too much to risk, but $10?

For that price I can get a month of all-you-can-watch Netflix and a pack of popcorn, enjoyed at my convenience in my living room with as many friends/family as I like.

"Destitute" is the wrong word. "Frugal" is the right one.

Besides, we ARE talking about Battleship here. You can buy the darned game for less than one 2-hour ticket price. You'll be able to own the movie in a few weeks for less than that. Not like it's some cultural event you've got to see.
