dictionaries ad nauseam | 3 May 2012 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

numen \NOO-min\, noun
Divine power, especially one who inhabits a particular object.

Example sentences:
This “liquid” flowing up his arm and out of the other was numen, the divine substance, the sacred spirit that lives in a certain place in the body and sustains us all.
-- Jonathan Carroll, White Apples

He was now fairly confident that a shrine, unlike a temple, would contain no resident numen.
-- Dave Duncan, Present Tense (Round Two of the Great Game)

Etymology:
Numen is derived from the Latin word nūmen meaning "a nod, command, or divine will or power."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

The game was endless last night! DH asked if you were there. I could barely keep my eyes open, in fact the moment the winning goal went in I had taken off my glasses to rub my eyes and missed it. Could hardly keep them open and focused. Went to bed the instant it was over. Sorry they both couldn’t have won. I was amazed at how exciting the whole thing was. Who knew I would like hockey?

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2012/05/03/teens-report-attempted-luring-in-east-mckeesport/

Cool story on the news last night. I hope this is the right video, I’m blocked from seeing it right now.

Some perv tries to lure these teen boys into his car. They matter-of-factly describe how he gave them money to get in the car.

“We took the money. But we didn’t get into the car.” LOL

Back from an estimate in some alternate universe-my contractor buddy and I couldn’t wait to get away from there-that customer really has no discernable connection to reality. We put on “Lunatic Fringe” in XXX’s truck and cranked it up as we were leaving their driveway...

John Edward’s trial is a movie
About a sleaze just barely human-
He has a wacko for a mistress and
Worships money as being his numen

Never mind that his wife was dying-
He didn’t want that to spoil his style
He thought the title of “president”
Might appeal to him for awhile

The mistress was so far out there
She saw fit to raise a stink
And call her spiritual adviser
Before she knew what to think

Someone on Fox said you just couldn’t make this stuff up, and I have to agree.

May I ask a favor of everyone? Could you please devote a 10 second prayer for my neighbors who just suddenly lost their 22 year old daughter? They need strength and peace, especially.
Thank you.

I have to LMAO every time they say something new about the Edwards circus-I heard today that Hunter threw a tantrum over a sandwich not being made to her specs while she was staying with her keepers, the Youngs-she supposedly called her guru over that, too. I might have found a way to send her to the nearest psych facility, if she had been staying with me and acting out like that.

Thank you!

And I’m so sorry for your neighbors’ loss-may God bless and give them comfort.

That is true-and it is much harder now to get even a dangerously unstable individual treated for 30-60 days, even if they self-commit, thanks to rampant frivolous lawsuits.

Yeah, the Ralph Ianotti video report has the teens, but doesn’t show their faces. It focuses on the kid’s hand holding a canned beverage The one says he took the money cause he wanted to buy a drink at the store. LOL
