In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

chrestomathy \kres-TOM-uh-thee\ , noun
A collection of selected literary passages.

Example sentences:
I had learned to read Sanscrit and to translate easy passages in the chrestomathy, and devoted myself with special zeal to the study of the Latin grammar and prosody.
-- Georg Ebers, The Story of My Life from Childhood to Manhood

This little chrestomathy preserves almost the only words of Atticus to have survived from antiquity.
-- Peter White, Cicero in Letters

Etymology:
Chrestomathy literally means "useful to learn" in Greek, from the roots chres- meaning "to use" and math- meaning "to learn."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

The changing chrestomathy in the multiplicity of Obama bios leaves us to believe he may not know who he really is

I'm not even sure if he knows where he was born.

That's part of why I always thought it was unreasonable for the reporters to pop the birther question on Republicans. The only honest answer is "how the heck would I know, I was not there"

One of the redeeming values of Facebook is to join some of the groups like civil war trust where folks put in links regarding the battles, letters, news stories of the day and other such chrestomathy.

Xsjr is home today and tomorrow for the mem day holiday. she called me at work to say a black couple had come to the door and was asking if we believed in the separation of church and state. she had no idea what they were talking about and said, we are Catholic, we know what we are doing, so ok, bye. LOL~! I didn’t have time to debrief her thoroughly but will be curious to see if it was Jehovah’s witnesses or not. I don’t think we have had those in a long time, we get Mormons regularly.

Reminds me of that one commercial “do people use smart phones to do stupid things?”

:)

That is a good use of it. Our library had a discussion group for about 6 months set up with readings and speakers about Tennessee’s role in the Civil War and the spouse put up a blog for additional discussion and readings but only a few participated.

We’re kind of in the middle about that aren’t we? I don’t want a theocracy or a government that isn’t based on Judeochristian principles. Otherwise, why have laws?

True. I would not my nation to be ruled by some church heirarchy nor by the editorial board of the NY Times.

Maybe there should be no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof?

Considering women and sports, where do you fall on the CBC kerfuffle? There's an article that makes some good points.

I like it!

Can we put something about “the right of the people to keep and bare arms shall not be infringed” on the list. Maybe second.

Green Tree Hill Memorial Traffic Jam named worst traffic in US (not in NYC or LA).

Home from another estimate for a customer who knows just what she wants but does not see why an up-front payment is required, because times are hard for her right now-(sigh) I give up...

The reading of a chrestomathy
From Obama’s self-serving book
Shows how he was influenced
By many a radical and crook

The Marxists showed him how
To fake a wide appeal and smile
And said go to Harvard law school
And learn robbery with style

Throw in a bit of racial angst
And denying he is half “white”-
He still reminds me of Nixon-
As much a mobster, but not as bright
