I should have mentioned she uses a Mac.

This may limit or widen the possibilities... though I think PCStitch is so named for a reason. (And it looks very nice.)

Any opinions on Mac-only programs?

I just googled “mac cross stitch program” and found two or three such programs. Have no familiarity with any of them, but you might want to take a look.

I have a Mac, and have been happy with MacStitch. I am still using an older version (2008), and haven’t yet discovered all the new bells and whistles in the latest version.
