For me, the 1997 re-release of Star Wars had some pretty nasty (and ruinous) CGI. I consider it the worst effects ever, since it ruined a perfectly good movie.

Wow, I thought that was universally heralded as an improvement. Sure beat the original where the ships in space were semi-opaque.

After the first installment of Star Wars in ‘77 everyone thought Lucas was brilliant. The more he filmed and tinkered the more obvious it was that he just got lucky. JarJar Binks? What was he thinking?

You should check out
Star Wars Revisited. This guy went back through the Special Edition trilogy, started re-editing it, adding visual effects, fixing mistakes that Lucasfilm either ignored or created, and generally did some great work.
