Free. Point your favorite search engine at "Knoppix live cd", go to knoppix.org, select the American/British flag if you don't like German, and follow the instructions. You will need to download the image, burn the cd, and reboot your computer from the cd.
www.knoppix.com has an english language version of the webpage. ;)

(most PC places like Best Buy can also recover data from a damaged OS disk). Best Buy uses the Geek Squad who don't know crap. They are also notorious for overcharging.
Had a broken screen one my laptop. Geek Swill quoted me $400 to replace. Local guy did it for $100.
