I doubt the cigarette lit the gasoline.

I am quite certain that it wasn’t the cigarette because you can douse a burning cigarette in gas unless there is a high-oxygen atmosphere (enough to make the cigarette burst into flame) present. Igniting gasoline requires a flame, spark or (rarely) intense pressure & heat. It’s far more likely that there was vapour in the air when he lit the cigarette.
