'Lunch Lady'friend of mine needs help with 'Michelle's Law of hiding the chocolate milk'*Vanity
FB message to me | 8/23/12 | me

"Where can I find out if something is a "law"? Supposedly, Michelle Obama made a law that all chocolate milk in the school milk cooler has to be in the back so the kids can't reach it. She doesn't want the elementary school kids to have chocolate milk, but if we sell it, then it has to be "hard for them to reach". So, little kids are crawling in to my milk cooler, hands are getting hurt, fingers are getting smooshed, etc etc and I'd like to find out if it's an actual "law" instead of just something she's "suggesting".

I'm the lunch lady at the school. Our supervisor came in and said we can't have the chocolate milk in front, it's a law from michelle Obama.

So, I'm just wondering, how do I find out if this is truly a law? I think it's stupid. The kids are all yelling - I can't reach the chocolate milk...i can't reach the chocolate milk. It's a disaster. She's hoping they'll choose the white milk."

A real, nonpartisan nutritionist would recommend putting the chocolate next to the white, or God forbid, strawberry milk. At least then the kids will drink some milk. For years pediatricians talked about “milk fat babies” then quietly changed their tune when they realized that whole milk was better for older kids, but not a substitute for breast milk. My daughter would never drink anything but whole milk. She couldn’t stand the low fat. On occasion when she hasn’t been drinking milk for a while, I’ve brought home chocolate. Red Robin, Shake Shack, Moosechelle is hell bent on kids growing up with eating disorders and compromised immune systems because they’re throwing their lunch away every day. Are there no sane, nutritionists to speak out against this. I’ve only had one nutrition class in college, but this crap makes my head want to explode.

Of course we know Michelle can’t make laws, but she has put her weight behind getting the school lunch program changed. My daughter works in the local school system and she was telling me today how bad the kids were saying the lunches were.

“I’ve only had one nutrition class in college, but this crap makes my head want to explode.”

I neglected to add I also worked in a world renowned teaching hospital in the their children’s hospital that had an entire floor devoted to eating disorders. I also knew several young children personally that died from them. I consider what Michelle and the Fed are doing regarding food as criminally endangering our youth.

You’ll never regret it. It’s the one thing I am so glad I did.

She should just print out a sign that says, "If you can't reach the chocolate milk, please ask for help."

It stinks to be the smallest kid in the class.

Basically, when an Obama speaks, unions listen. This is something parents are going to have to tackle.

How can Michelle enforce a law she has ‘made?’ How long do you think the jail sentence will be? Fine? How many hundreds and thousands of cafeteria workers will be in jail because of it? Molon Labe to that one - come and get me.

It’s the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave here, and WTP (we the people) elect the government to keep us safe and to keep order. We do not elect them to tell us how to eat, when to pee, how to bag our food, etc. AND our rights do not come from them. AND the Founding Fathers wisely added the Second Amendment so we could protect ourselves from them, because they knew that governments would be the worst usurpers of OUR rights.

I'm sure they are some but if they speak out I suppose they are afraid that the government will visit them.

The above posters are correct that Michelle Obama cannot make laws; however, the USDA, which funds and regulates the school lunch program, reports to her husband, the President of the United States. The USDA has issued new regulations for school lunches, and flavored milk is addressed in the new regulations. I believe the USDA was influenced by Mrs. Obama's Healthy Kids initiative.

Thanks to google, I found this:

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-01-26/pdf/2012-1010.pdf

These are pages of the Federal Register dealing with changes to school lunch regulations beginning July 1, 2012.

On page 4095 of the above document, I found this paragraph: "This final rule allows flavor in fat-free milk only, and fat-free and low-fat choices only (consistent with Dietary Guidelines recommendations and the NSLA as amended by the HHFKA). Flavored lowfat (1 percent or 1⁄2 percent) milk is not allowed in the NSLP or the SBP upon implementation of the rule in SY 2012– 2013 because it contributes added sugars and fat to the meal and would make it more difficult for schools to offer meals that meet the limits on calories and saturated fat. We anticipate that the new calorie limits will lead menu planners to select milk with the lowest levels of added sugar. Implementing calorie maximums gives menu planners more flexibility than limiting added sugar."

I just skimmed through the document, I didn't read the whole thing. I doubt it recommends pushing the chocolate milk to the back of the refrigerator. However, these regulations are discouraging chocolate milk in school lunches.

Just addressing the chocolate milk question, per our district’s interpretation of the regulations, flavored milk (chocolate) has to be low fat or fat free.

As a food service director of a large school district, I can state there is no such rule, law or directive. We offer flavored milk to all students.

The new regulations have us concerned about the low level of calories for growing students but are not regs that we cannot adjust too with minor changes.

As for the supervisor making that statement, it is absolutely false and they are hiding behind their own biases.

As for Michelle Obama..... she should worry more about what her and her family are eating and leave the rest of us alone.

Did Michelle REALLY push through a regulation/advice to put the chocolate milks in the back of the cooler?

Former Mayon Nagin ain’t gonna be happy.

I was a Kroger the other day and saw some carry-with salt and pepper shakers and thought to my self, if I lived in NY I’d have to carry those in my purse. Looks like this crazyness is spreading so I will pick up a pair next time.

The second phase will be the banning of carry in salt.

Then you will need a prescription for salt.
