A number of states have new laws against driving while talking on a cell phone. California is just one. Their current tiered version of fines is about to get heavily raised because people seem to think that cell phone controls them.

Same law in Nevada & I am pretty sure there are other states, also.

The California legislature was working on ‘other distractions’, including LISTENING to the radio while driving & TALKING to a PASSENGER in your car.

I have driven over a million miles in my lifetime. I do not own a cellphone, nor do I wish to have one. They seem too much like an electronic umbilical cord for me.

However, I have seen what can happen when people are not paying attention to their driving. It pisses me off big time when I see people grab their cell phones & drift all over the road.

In part I agree with you, however, there is no need for such additional, layer-upon-layer laws. I encourage you to look up “Inattentive Driving” violation. I’m willing to bet all 57 states have this law already on the books.

And yes, I totally agree, whenever I see someone driving (badly) and talking on a cell phone I always turn and tell my kids, “She’s too busy talking on the phone to worry about driving right now”.
