Anyone suggesting that my marriage can be destroyed by anything man made is kind of dopey. I do not care what the world, country, state, or county recognizes my marriage as. I only care that my wife recognizes it and that GOD recognizes it. When I face GOD he is not going to care about the stupid things that man recognized. I believe that if you were married and divorced GOD is going to question you on that. If your answer is it is a “state issue, not yours’” you might not appreciate that he does not agree with you. Question: Have you ever been divorced and re-married?

I guess I’m now an oddity on this site, but I LIKE the government promoting marriage, and ONLY opposite-sex marriage, for I think that this the basis of a healthy and strong country...Oh well, perhaps there are other sites committed to family values...I shall look.

FR is supposed to be the premiere site for conservatism--fiscal AND social--but that doesn't mean all the posters agree with the owner. Issues like this are what drive me to (and away from) this site.

Sad that the Democrats can all unite & rally around their social values, but the Republican platform is just out there to placate the "religious rubes." They publicly say one thing, but privately believe another. But as we see on this thread, they're starting to get public with their true intentions. When will social conservatives get the message that their votes are wanted, but their opinions are not?

Well, then, how do counterfeit bills destroy the economy? They look just like other bills, don't they? Why do cashiers use those special markers to spot fake bills? If fake marriage is not detriment to real marriage, than fake money shouldn't be a detriment to real money, correct?

You are confusing man's world [currency] with GOD's world [marriage]. Nothing to compare.

Man's world IS God's world, but God's world is not automatically Man's world.

God is not up in Heaven, a disembodied entity separate from Earth. God is part of Heaven, part of Earth, part of humanity. Our laws should be based on God's Law: nature. That is not to say our laws should be based on a singular religion, but should be based on the Tao, the natural laws that CS Lewis wrote about so eloquently, and that exist, with minor variations, throughout every culture.

Marriage is one of those natural laws. It cannot be rationalized away into a separate, private compartment of life just because you have homosexual friends/relatives who want what is unnatural.

Weird ramblings, that are irrelevant, I don’t care about you and your wife, and your own personal marriage, but you keep sharing with me anyway.

Activists know that they could have civil unions pretty easily, what they want is the word “marriage”, so as to destroy it.

You want to destroy “marriage” as well, making government civil unions (which would merely replace marriage) the norm, and allowing “marriage” to fade into obscurity as it becomes a little religious ceremony for some, in their individual churches, something for personal consumption only, but not applicable to society at large.

You legalize homosexual marriage and polygamy either way in your proposal.

Maybe the left likes starting these silly issues so that we are preoccupied fighting over things that really don’t matter while the real important things get destroyed while we are not paying attention. To suggest that marriage is the cornerstone of civilization is to suggest that people were not civilized before marriage and that we have since marriage been civilized. I hardly believe either of those to be totally true. My point is that with a $16 Trillion debt and a country that is about to fall off a cliff the fact that we do not allow civil unions is by no means a safety net and the arguing over it is taking us away from the real issues that will destroy us. When the United States no longer exist in the first world because of the destruction caused by debt and unfunded liabilities all of us married folks can sit on a curb and say, “Well, at least we went down without homos being able to get married!” History will think we had it all on the ball, right?

Government, or the Catholic church part of the government, has controlled marriage for many, many, centuries, it is how polygamy was ended in western civilization, and how homosexual “marriage” never came into being at all.

At last you admit it! Your “GOD” is not a spiritual being; it is Mamon! Material wealth and earthly pleasures are what matter to you.

Money, money, money. That’s what you worship, first and foremost just like so many others.

LOL, the social liberal comes out as he pushes the homosexual agenda among conservatives.

I am against the way you want to answer the issue because you create a slippery slope away from traditional marriage for society on the whole, IMO. And married people will still have to live in the weirdo society you would be creating around them. I apologize for the flaming.

Is alcohol alcohol because we don't allow children to drink it? If we allowed children to drink would alcohol cease to be alcohol?

That did not happen when we invented the "kiddie cocktail". Imagine if all the drunks got together and said if you make "kiddie cocktails" you will be diluting my drink. The state should not recognize the kiddie cocktail. The bartender would say, "No, I am still putting into your drink the same thing. This is different, and changes nothing that existed before it" I cannot get my arms around the thought that you have that the government is some how holding marriage as an institution together when it originated as a religious institution that was hijacked by the state. Yet you don't at the same time admit that the state has done just as much damage by allowing divorce. In fact, i would be willing to bet that allowing civil unions would do no more damage to the institution of marriage than divorce has. You and I can just disagree with this issue. In the end, I just think I have a better understanding of what is destroying our civilization than you do and I am sure you feel the opposite. I understand that sometimes minds cannot be changed and I am okay with that.

“And you really think that the state will prevent that if that intrusion happens here, just because they issue licenses......that is very naive on your part.”

No, the state doesn’t prevent people from robbing banks - but they sure as hell make it costly for me to do so, so I don’t - and most others don’t.

“The country that you grew up in had Catholic priest molesting children and then quietly being moved to other parishes so that they could again do it to other children. The country you grew up in had a Penn State coach molesting boys in the shower for 30 years while others looked the other way and pretended it was not happening. Is that what you want your kids growing up in.”

Yep, given that legalization of those activities seems to be the alternative being referred to...since the country that I grew up in DID NOT permit that behavior, even if it did, unfortunately, happen in some cases.

Hard to believe that a guy is pushing “homosexual marriage” on freerepublic.

Oh, we got that message, and we’re the majority, but the single biggest mistake we, collectively, make, is trying to tolerate this crap, because these people will never stop pushing it on everyone.

I am not promoting homosexual marriage. I am support less government. When I got married I went to city hall and gave them $75 for a piece of paper and then we went to a Catholic church and the priest married us. The fact that I paid a toll to the government had absolutely no input on the marriage, in my eyes. You find it hard to believe that some one on the Free Republic is supporting homosexual marriage? Your reading comprehension lacks something. I find it hard to believe that people on the Free Republic are supporting more government. I guess it is government by design ... more when it serves me!!!!

It's not so surprising. The Social Liberal wing of the Republican party are voicing their true intentions louder than ever. With the Romney as the candidate, they can draw more "moderates" and swat those pesky so-cons away.

Karl Rove came out on the O'Reilly Factor and said, "And remember, this year, no one is seriously talking about ending abortion."

They really don't care about that morality "junk."

Gay marriage is a direct threat to the First Amendment right to freedom of religion. Regardless of how you feel about the morality of it, the legalization of it will weaken out religious freedoms across the board. Once made legal, the church and individual people will become entangled in all sorts of discrimination claims. Our individual rights will taken away as their rghts by affiliation will become superior. This is why gay marriage must be fought against, all our rights are at stakes for the wishes of a few people.
