Raising Boys (A Dad’s Advice for Moms)
The Good Men Project ^ | February 8, 2010 | Tom Matlack

Let’s get one thing clear from the get go: moms are generally better parents than dads. And that goes double for me. I’ve had three kids across two marriages and I am undoubtedly the weak link. My 17-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son trust their step-mom more than they trust me, which proves that I married well but am still getting the hang of being a dad. Most of us are.

That said, there are a few subtle nuances that I have picked up along the way as a dad that might come in handy for moms raising boys.

Ladies, here are some things to think about with your boys:

I had to have surgery in January, and he was with me in the prep room. The nurses teased, thought it was my “boyfriend.” Poor guy. Anyway, as they were rolling me into surgery, they stopped to let us hug or kiss, nope, we really aren’t touchy, feely. And we have taken care of all of the emotional discussion in private.

Son’s are special, that is for sure. I hope your surgery went well.

Perfect, had a little cancer taken out. Amazing what a little bitty thing can do to a person. How sick it can make you.

“FReep you and the horse you rode in on. Take responsibility for yourself and your children, or stop calling yourself a man and say you’re a male ape.”

It took 11 posts before someone slapped this lame, excuse-making clown. Nice job.

A father giving advice to single mothers about rearing sons ... the pathology of our society in a nutshell. Maybe he has some good suggestions. “Here’s how you can better do the job I should be doing.”

Pretty wide brush you’re painting with, there.

Most divorces are initiated by the woman.

Most are not as a result of any abuse by the man.

Most, as in my case, were the result of a woman not feeling “fulfilled” when her husband was out breaking his ass trying to support the family. No abuse, no harsh treatment. One problem was that I didn’t become her female pal like she wanted me to.

Although she tried everything possible to remove my kids from my life, I fought to stay a father, and it cost me many thousands of dollars. As each of the kids entered their teens, they came to live with me. One is now 30, the other is 25. They would have been a lot better off if their mother had had and used this information.

And yes, the advice given in the article is absolutely spot-on.

I’m sorry about your circumstances. However, unless you agree with the author that women are better parents than men, I don’t think you disagree with me.
