TIgers-Cards grudge goes all the way back to 1934.

Cards won Series, 4-3, but, in game 7 with Cards leading 9-0 in Detroit, Ducky Medwick hit a triple and, after a huge cloud of dust (NOBODY saw what actually happened), was accused by Owen, Tigers 3B, of spiking him. Minor dustup, but, when the Cards took the field in the next half-inning, the Detroit fans pelted Medwick in left field with everything not nailed down.

Commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis was at that game, and, after two attempts to clear the field and resume play, called the two managers, Medwick, and Owen over to his box -- in full sight of the fans -- and held a drumhead court.

Medwick was ejected. The Tiger fans roared.

And the Tigers, thoroughly inspired by now, went on to lose game 7 by a score of 11-0.

The 1968 Series can be summed up in two sentences. Lou Brock didn't slide when he should have done in game 6, and Curt Flood slipped -- for the only time in his career -- when chasing an important fly ball in game 7, due to Busch Stadium's absolutely horrid (and badly maintained) turf. The following spring, just btw, Gussie Busch himself ordered the field replaced with the 3rd generation of AstroTurf, called something else by then (and made by Monsanto, a St. Louis-based company).

2006 was just the START of payback to Detroit: "hit it to the pitcher!" was the battle cry for the Cards, as Tiger pitching made (if I recall correctly) 7 fielding/throwing errors in just 5 games.

Apologies: Lou Brock's non-slide occurred in game 5, not game 6.

Sorry for the typo.
