In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
sockdolager; noun
1. something unusually large, heavy, etc. 2. a decisive reply, argument, etc. 3. a heavy, finishing blow: His right jab is a real sockdolager.
Etymology: 1830, "a decisive blow," fanciful formation from sock (v.) "hit hard;" also said to be a variant of doxology, on a notion of "finality." The meaning "something exceptional" is attested from 1838. Sockdologising was nearly the last word President Abraham Lincoln heard. During the performance of Tom Taylor's "Our American Cousin," assassin John Wilkes Booth (who knew the play well) waited for the line "Well, I guess I know enough to turn you inside out, you sockdologising old man-trap," and as the audience laughed, Booth fired the fatal shot.

I understand the allure of the downstairs in a storm-I never, ever stay upstairs during a storm-it just doesn’t feel secure. Maybe it is an atavistic memory from when we learned we were more secure in caves than in forests during a storm.
MrT5 never minded being upstairs during a storm, no matter how loudly the wind howled around the house and in the trees-his family was from the great white north, and he grew up in the pacific northwest, and I always wondered if that had anything to do with it...
Well looking up at trees through the skylight and knowing we’ve had them come down not infrequently is my reason for fearing them! The house has been spared thus far, thankfully. Power has flickered but held thus far.
Stay safe Jersey Freepers! My sister lost power and landline service earlier today and my dad’s assisted living place has a generator going. I’m texting her twitter updates from the Gov.
I saw the road collapse leading into Atlantic City. My nephew lives there and his brother works there. Scary. The one who lives there owns a lot of property around the island. I hope he moved inland for safety. Jersey isn’t looking so good, but NYC is worse. Wonder if the subways will be operable by election day if flooded.
We have had some wind gusts that took a couple of trees out, but no major power outages. I hear there are bigger outages in the next county over, where Vast stayed when he was here.
That is a damn good reason for avoiding unnecessary exposure, in my opinion-limbs from nearby trees on the hill just across the road blowing onto the roof or against upstairs windows is another concern of mine-it has never happened, though.

I just saw on Fox that there is flooding on Long Island, and that power is out there and in parts of Manhattan.
Is it snowing yet? We did not lose power, thankfully. Hope Truthy and Hobbes weathered it ok.

How’ve you been??
I went to bed about 8:30 last night and just got up. About 10 last night they shut down our command center and everyone went home as the storm was projected to go south of us at that point. I sensed all day yesterday that the precautions were outrageous and we would be spared. I was right. Heck, we were in lockdown before the storm even made landfall...HOURS before and we are well inland. The flood was about one year ago, thus they over did it.
No snow here. A little farther south and east, in the mountains of WV and MD, I heard a report of 22 inches.
