Husband is in complete agreement on that. Saban has these moments occasionally.

What!!! That's what burned Big Tex!

I was at the Cotton Bowl when UT beat Navy and Stauback in the Cotton Bowl...I think it was '63. Navy went in #1 IIRC.

Times change. Tell that to Michigan, Stanford, Miami, Oklahoma . . . The fact remains that their record is better than KSU’s.

And if ND beats USC?

You have made my point very concisely, in many of those bowl games Notre Dame played opponents that were much stronger than they were. This is an example of how stupid the bowl game system is, it’s not about the best match-up, it’s about TV ratings. For example, the 1995 Fiesta Bowl, where a 6-4-1 Notre Dame jumped over many superior teams to get crushed by Colorado. This was a $3 million dollar payoff that more deserving teams were denied. I believe it also led to the BCS. No other major sport determines their post-season participants by the size of the audience they can produce. If a lightly followed team earns a playoff spot, that’s the way it goes and the networks can just suck it up.

IF ND beats USC and K-State and Oregon win out? Confusion and someone will inevitably be left out. In that situation though, I think the BCS finds a way to put ND in the title game, mainly due to the huge fan base.

Which is great and all, but needing a miracle finish to beat Louisiana-Lafayette, Really?!?!?

Every team has a 'down game' sometime in the season. The trick is to survive it.

If Oregon and KSU win out, there is no chance Alabama gets to to #2.

NO chance? You obviously have never watched the BCS in action before, LOL. They will arrange it so that the top 2 in the BCS are the teams that will generate the most revenue and ratings, no matter what the polls show. Alabama will grab more viewers than K-State, even with an extra loss. Bama has trophies, traditions, and is a recent "dynasty". K-State is a fluke from flyover country. Watch for it.

Oregon is mildly interesting, because it's new, it has huge money making it into something, and has lots of scoring. They top Notre Dame only because Notre Dame does have much recent success. If the Irish were in the Top 5 for 3 of the last 5 years, Oregon would have "no chance".

(And I say this even though I want to see a lovable long-time loser like K-state to enjoy some time in the spotlight... and this is IF Bama wins out, and has at last one BIG win in that run.)

Have you seen the size of the gap between Alabama and Oregon/KSU. It is mathematically impossible for Bama to overtake one of them unless KSU or Oregon loses.

It will help their recruiting for sure, but there will be a lot of players who have a natural aversion to the Aggie “culture”, if you can call it that. ‘Cult’ being the operative syllable.

Ave Maria! :-)

As they should be, they’re the only undefeated team. One of the things that I don’t like about college football is that teams are eliminated before the season even starts. The only sport where this happens. I don’t care about strength of schedule if you go undefeated you deserve a chance to win the championship. Best of luck to your team.

Well, I would not agree with you there. Strength of schedule has to matter. I mean, it was all too embarrassing for the “mighty” SEC last week to be playing Jacksonville State, Wofford, Georgia Southern, and Western Carolina. Now, Notre Dame may lose to USC, but at least they are finishing the year with a significant challenge worthy of propelling them into the championship game. Thanks for your “Best of luck.” We’ll need it in Troy. But then, luck is an Irish virtue, is it not?

Now, in light of the fact that Notre Dame just might be able to propel itself into the title game . . . with a little help from Mary and Joseph . . . by virtue of a win over USC, you should add to the list in your article with an addendum: Notre Dame is 4-1 against Alabama, all since 1973, and was 4-0 against the “legendary” Bear Bryant. Should they meet again this year, don’t place your bets too quickly on the team wearing red. The one wearing gold helmets just might surprise you.

1801. Very good!

USC - University of Santiago de Compostela - Founded 1495 (1525?)

Looks like we all stole the acronym.

“Get a new accountant.”

Well, that is really bad news, since I am an accountant.

Do we only count 10.5 then because of 2004? Or only 9 because of Dickinson? Or only 8.5 because of both?

It gets soooo confusing.

I dunno, but Notre Dame could claim 18 if they wanted to.

This accountant counts 19, but did you know that there are 3 kinds of accountants?

Those that can count and those that can’t.
