The editors of "Motion Picture Daily" and "Fame" magazine name Jack Webb, "the most promising star of tomorrow" and Dragnet "the best radio program of its type" for 1950. 8 PM Gunsmoke. May 8, 1954. CBS net. "The Constable". Sustaining. When a trail boss objects to Marshal Dillon's peacekeeping methods, and the town's merchants ask him to ease off, Dillon vows to make no further arrests. The town then hires an unusual "constable" to keep the peace. The script was used on the program again on March 20, 1960 (see cat. #62625) and on the Gunsmoke television series on May 30, 1959.
