I’d fire her, too. It’s called “privacy”.

The pastor claims that though she scratched out the automatic gratuity on the bill, she left a $6 cash tip at the table.

If the pastor isn't lying (and I don't think the waitress is denying it), she actually left about a 17% tip anyway.

Sounds like an attempt at a cute joke that backfired.

According to another witness, who sat at a nearby table during the entire episode, the pastor’s miracle of multiplying five loaves and two fishes, significantly cut into the order and consequently into the restaurant’s business.

The story certainly doesn’t point to a pastoral scene.

Stop being ridiculous. It was a large party (more than 6 people).

I seldem leave the tip on the card.

I always leave cash for a tip, so the actual server can do with it as they please.

And I always, always tip.

I even tip $1 for every $2.50 beer I drink at the local watering hole.

Oh My.

And here I was assuming her $35 check was for two or three people.

It obviously was just for herself.

A party of twenty? Not sure how many reading this have ever waited on tables for a living but a party of twenty is pretty difficult. Separate checks on a party of twenty is just unreasonable and rude.

Good grief.

A party of 20 had a check of $34.93? Can you have a party of 20 that wants separate checks and the computer still add on the 18% automatically?

The note does not complain about bad service- which it certainly would have if the service was bad.

Until a couple of years ago, our local government employees were not allowed to pay tips on business meals. Now it is limited to 15%.

I think the Reddit poster got what she deserved. Being an atheist, she was angry about the “God thing” so she posted to her online pals proof of how rotten Christians are (and expose a customer to abuse in the process), and she rode the lightning for it. Applebee’s statement is right on the money.

It was a “lighthearted” joke? That’s how seriously she took her job.

I bet this pastor is all in favor of paying the government more than 10%.

Not so sure. She set up her own 15 member storefront *taxscam* church

I agree that the automatic 18% is insulting to customers, but the “Pastor” (according to the Bible, a female pastor is a possible as a male mother or a female father) shouldn’t have taken it out on the waitress.

If she objected to the 18%, she should have adjusted it to 15% or 10% or whatever she felt was earned. I actually LOVE the idea of crossing out the 18% and putting in a fair amount of one’s choice, but leaving 0 (unless the service was aggressively horrific) is not right.

Also, the “I give God 10%” comment is unbiblical because bragging about your giving is wrong (Matthew 6:1-4). Also, if she is on staff as a “pastor” she is likely receiving a good portion of the 10% (or whatever %) that the congregation is giving to the church.

Yes. The computer can track multiple checks issued to one party. It still adds up the total number of diners in that party.

I think a good hypothetical is meeting up with your buddies at a local sports bar for a fantasy baseball draft. People may sort of come and go and many separate checks may be issued. However, the servers are working the overall large party throughout.

When I think about it, the separate checks issue is actually probably a pretty good justification for the auto-added gratuity. I've been with groups of 10 before where almost everybody but me decided to stick the server when they were done. I felt awful and reached into my own pocket to try to make up at least some of the difference.
