An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.
Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.
"I give God 10%," Bell wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip and scribbling in an emphatic "0" where the additional tip would be. "Why do you get 18?" (There were more than eight people in Bell's party, triggering the auto-tip.)
Welch, who snapped a photo of the bill from a fellow server and uploaded to Reddit, defended her right to post the receipt. "I thought the note was insulting, but also comical," she told Consumerist.com. "And I thought other users would find it entertaining.”

auto tip at Applebee’s? I’ll not be doing that place any more.
I’ve had to make my living in the F and B industry at two points in my life, and all auto tips will do is guarantee medicrity will overtake this niche. Being a bar tender, waiter or waitress is a great entrepreneurial training job.
And if 10% is good enough for G-D, it’s good enough for the gov’t!
Just wait till the COGIC convention comes back to St Louis. They’ll be coming in groups of 20 and leaving no tip after taking up two hours of time
Wow, that pastor is an ASS. He was quibbling over $2.79. The grace of God flows through him like a clogged LAD.
This was called Black Expo in Indianapolis. Four appetizers shared by 8 with water all around. I would tell my daughter to call in sick. Finally restaurants decided to shut down that week.
I work hard for my pay and no one gives me a "tip"....
at Olive Garden, we had a group of 8 or more so they automatically added the tip....then they had the audacity to give us a receipt for our credit card with an additional line for "extra" tip....balonnney....

Sorry; no matter how painful; it is not the waitresses job to take onGiven her response; it does make me wonder; if her attitude 'betrayed' her; when serving this 'party'; and so perhaps; a full tip; less than earned.
Whatever the case - and do not like 'cheap tippers' - but it is her job to 'serve'. Not judge. . .then embarrass and make a bad joke of; a customer. It is her 'employer' she is repping; not herself.
Bottom line; she deserved to be fired. These kids growing up with 'realty tv' mind. . .and 'exposure' the name of the game.
How did the waitress harm the reputation of the “pastor” by exposing the truth? The “pastor” is admitting to having had an undeserved reputation.
Separate checks?
The fact is the worst day for tips is Sunday, and it’s bad witness for church goers.

Yep. There was a big stink years ago when during the Black Expo (Or the Circle City Classic, I forget)in Indy that some of the shops at Circle Center mall would be closed during that time. They were called racist. But they simply couldn’t sustain the shoplifting losses.
Sheer lack of class on both of their parts.
