There is such a thing as Perceptual Adaptation, and I suppose it's possible for the adaptation to fail.

I saw a show recently about a women that was born severely cross eyed and did not have corrective surgery until well into her forties. She spent her entire life seeing only through one eye and because of this her brain had never been trained to have depth perception.

Well she started a set of eye exercises to retrain her brain and after about six months she had succeeded to discern depth.
