Not to worry. It’s just people following our vice president’s advice and shooting their shotguns into the air.

No more “mine shaft gap?”

Haha!!

Really though...so much of Southern Illinois was subject to underground coal mining many years back that there is no telling what is going on down there. If a support column “pops” it would stress another one...then...pop.

We lost our Jr. High to mine sinkage when I was a kid...there was always the occasional “sink hole” closing a road.

Here in Indiana a year or two ago, we had about a 5 earthquake. I was at my kitchen table and heard a loud boom as it happened.

Prairie, what does mil still have that is bat shaped?

Last year one bat flew over. Just today it was 2.

I get everthing here. God forbid if our area took up arms we’d be decimated (lol).

But yes, 100% bat. I believe they are coming from Whiteman (sp?).

The sound of sonic booms we get will give you a heart attack. First time we got one I just moved here and my Dad and I were painting the new house. BOOM! Dad said, “WTF was that dynamite?”

Have experienced the booms twice in lifetime. Both times a quake followed within a few months. It sometimes comes down to a guessing game but am in full agreement with you.

Interesting.

I’ve experience a few such unexplained booms and/or shaking over the last 40 years. There never seems to be an explanation.

Skyquakes, so called, have been going on since forever.

Those interested in the peculiar phenomenon, the cause of which remains unknown, should take a look at the books of John Keel, especially “Disneyland of the Gods”.

I don’t know if you saw it, but we had a big explosion in a neighborhood in Indianapolis a short while back. It happened a ways south of me at about 11PM. Well, I heard it and thought it was a storm. It wasn’t. It was a criminal act and the people responsible have been charged.

My point is, how far and wide did people hear this?

If there is no other logical explanation, it could be pre quake activity.

I think you are correct. No proof, only experience to type from. I’m southeast of you by about 400 miles. Since the eastern fault was active last year it stands to reason, with logic, the Big Fault Line in the middle of the country was put under stress. (imho)

We hear large, earth-rattling booms in our area over much of the year. It’s proceeded by large, ominous, dark clouds and bright flashes of light across the sky. I think they call the big booms “thunder”.

This is the New Madrid fault area... and mysterious booms like this are not uncommonly heard before an earthquake hits. So maybe that is an explanation, time will tell.
