A burglar is thought to be lying dead in a Leeds sewer after going on the run underground.
The man and an accomplice escaped after police went to investigate a break-in at a set of commercial buildings near the city centre.
One is thought to have run off above ground, but the other is believed to have clambered into the sewerage system under Hope Road, off Mabgate near West Yorkshire Playhouse.
A major search operation by emergency services failed to find any sign of him – except for a set of footprints that eventually tailed off.

We had some local criminal types drown in a sewer here about twenty years ago. Supposedly they were trying to break IN to a prison to free some of their criminal buddies.
He “clambered into the sewerage system”. Those English, quaint. Like Hobbits.

This poor fool never heard of sewer gas. The fool jumps in the sewer and is dead within minutes from a lack of oxygen or hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides.
Regardless you never go in to a confined space with out testing the atmosphere first. Confined spaces kill a half dozen people or more in this country every year.
i always understood the dangers of Hydrogen Sulfide and agree with you.
Back in the early 50s Southern Bell lost two men at Lenox Ave. CO.(Miami Beach) manholes,. I also believe the Fire Dept. lost at least one man there also.
They enlarged the manhole and added another opening so we could use one for extra air blowers. We were required to run at least two blowers at all times.
All of which brings me to this question: How did “Andy” escape through 500 yards of sewer pipe in the movie “Shawshank Redemption” without dying?
Actually I have never watched the movie.
But if the sewer is big enough and has a natural draft the atmosphere could be kept habitable.
But as an escaping prisoner you would be risking your life to find out unless you can figure out a way to test the atmosphere before you go in.
