In rural desert areas I regularly see how fast the rental car can go in the US.

Funny. I used to travel a lot for work. Whenever you turn in a rent-car, they always ask if there is anything wrong with the car. I always answered "It doesn't go fast enough."

You have to be carefull nowadays because some rental companies have devices( GPS?) that track your top speeds and/or area of travel so as to make sure you don’t violate the terms of your rental agreement. I guess its to make sure you don’t use their car to race in or take it to areas that may be prohibited.

They can dump the data and end up in effect penalizing you with extra charges on your CC for violating the rental agreement.
