Hate to say it but the best hot dogs I ever ate was about 40 years ago in Denmark. I still dream about them. They had a long skinny frank that was garlicy on a little short cardboard tasting bun. The topping was a mustardy horseradish and fried onions. Oh my goodness! Yummy! I’ve never been able to replicate them so I’m guessing the secret was in the frank.
You’re right, ketchup doesn’t belong on hot dogs any more than beans belong in chili. We had an exchange student who hated mustard and wanted ketchup on his first dog. Nope, sorry, kiddo. I made his dog with mustard. Ah, he understood!
