"The reason I think they should be forgiven is because all they serve to do is pay inflated salaries to idiot “professors” who sit on their loony asses pontificating"

That's cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I know a few kids who went on some wild sprees with student loan money. They just kept borrowing & kept spending on good times.

A couple of the girls went to Paris & have loads of 'memory' pictures - all with cocktails & guys in the photos.

There are doctors who are in a good practice - behind on paying back their loans.

They all need to get in the real world...You borrow money & you pay it back.

Forgiven - No.

Dischargeable in bankruptcy - Yes.

You don’t understand my post because I was too brief. I the little a-holes and their parents who owe get forgiveness on the loans. We need to also refund the money to the responsible students and parents that paid theirs. In other words, forget forgiveness on the loans and collect them.

I’ve always wondered about how all these young kids go on European vacations.

“Hell, no! “

Ditto! They borrowed it, promised to pay it back and should.

Maybe some people should look for a job instead of spending years in college partying. Now they expect to have their loans forgiven. NO WAY!

And not only that, they expect to start out making fortunes instead of what the market will allow. Maybe they should have figured out before now that they aren’t worth nearly as much as they think.

I started working full time when I was 17, AND went to school, got a full time job after I graduated along with another part time job. I love to work, always have.

We own businesses and I never ask anyone to do something I’m not willing to do. We have had our same employees for years. Good luck finding good employees these days, laziest bunch of people I have ever seen.

I went by Home Depot after work and saw employees leaning over the checkout talking about how little their paychecks were while hundreds of plants are dying from no water. Makes my head hurt!

Thanks for making that observation. Not all Gen Yers are spoiled frat boys and entitled princesses who got worthless degrees in Women’s studies.

Having a +10 year gap of college grads just treading water is NOT structurally sound for the economy, it’s something us more level headed 20 year olds worry about.

Student loans should be given by the colleges. They then might take more interest in providing a product worth paying for. The gubment has no business being in this racket.

this is the silliest proposal we’ve heard in a long time!

the kids need to grow up
you borrow money, you pay it back

simple enough?

if you’re taking Mideaval Lesbian Liberation Community Organizing Studies.... you shouldn’t borrow too much in the first place, but if you’re stupid enough (and permitted) to do so, you pay back the money you borrowed .... if that means you go out and get a real job, or even go out and get a krappy job and lower your standard of living to repay the money people trusted you with,
that’s what you do.

You will just prolong the problem by doing that.

We are seeing the opinion shift to college not being worth it. Let the bubble burst.

Makes prices come down by making the ones who took the loans eat it, otherwise the tax payer will eat it again.

Hell, no! I paid mine off on time. I took on the debt and the responsibility for it, and I satisfied that obligation.

Ditto!

Of course when I graduated (dark ages!), the amount I owed was a lot smaller than the typical student loan balance is today. But then again, so was the salary for my brand new job. The government has been "inflating" the currency for so long it's easy to forget there was a time when a thousand a month was a damn fine wage (new car under $2000, a house in the suburbs around $30,000)...

As the Red Queen said to Alice, "Sometimes you must run very very fast just to stay in one place!"

Regards,
GtG

That a great economics lesson. Borrow money, get an education and bilk someone else for your debt!
Student loan forgiven yea sure if the College reimburses the Govt!
Pay your debts! You will have to for the rest of your life!

Yes. By the university endowments, not the government.

We'll see just how far their compassion for their students actually goes. :)

One option that my accountant suggested, when we were discussing my nephew going to college next year:

Revamp the George Bush 2005 bankruptcy law by allowing student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy if they have been out of college for 7 to 10 years.

Revamp the student loan industry to give student loans based on the student’s credit report. Most potential students have no credit history to speak of, but if they want it bad enough they will find a way to finance it and major in something that is marketable like engineering, accounting, nursing, not b.s. like communications, afro-american studies, geneder bender b.s., nor psuedo-sciences like psychology, sociology, education, marketing et al.

The current system rewards Sallie Mae and universities without any risk on their part.
