Pitbulls Euthanized After Attacking, Killing Thomasville Search & Rescue Border Collie

Forsyth County, NC -- A Triad search and rescue organization is mourning the loss of one of its search dogs. The dog, a border collie, was attacked last week by two pitbulls.

Monday, Forsyth County Animal Control said the border collie died. Tuesday, the pitbulls - one male and one female - were euthanized after the owner forfeited his rights to them.

Officers were called to a dog attack last Thursday in the southern part of the county. A witness told an animal control officer he saw two brown pitbulls from a home in the 3900 block of Laurel Grove Road run into a nearby backyard where they attacked the border collie.

The witness told the officer he chased the two dogs out of the border collie's kennel. The pitbulls' owner, Antonio Nowell, was not home at the time of the incident. Animal control spoke with Nowell's son who was advised by his father to sign the two pitbulls, Dillon and Nika, over to the officer.

Tim Jennings with Forsyth Animal Control tells WFMY News 2 that in March they visited Nowell about the dogs running at large and being potentially dangerous. Nowell was fined and given preventive measures to put in place, in order to control the dogs and be incompliance with county ordinance.

After last week's incident, the investigating officer said it looked like the pitbulls were able to dig their way out of the kennels.

Jennings said the case has been turned over to the Forsyth County District Attorney's Officer for further review.
