Which made his observations about the west coast lack of dress code carry more weight. When Mr White Suit talks about people who chose to impress with the brain and don’t care about the clothes is says something. People should wear what they like, Wolfe likes that white suit, I like black khakis and a t-shirt. I used to wear button down shirts to work, then I decided I was tired of the disguise.

On I Love Lucy, I almost never recall seeing Ricky NOT wearing a suit.

Our family went to our daughter's university graduation three years ago and to our son's USMC boot camp graduation in April. (The Parris Island graduation was a far, far, far bigger deal than any university graduation could be). On both occasions we made an effort--the kids' father wore a fine business suit, I wore a pretty silk suit in a neutral, daytime-appropriate color, pearls, scarf. My son's girlfriend, my brother, and my sister-in-law, all of whom were there, also dressed the same way.

Only a few other families there dressed respectfully. I'm not talking about the cost of the clothing, only about neatness, cleanliness, appropriate and modest choices, adherence to tradition and decency. There were women with their boobs hanging out, with skirts slit up to the hip, people in raggedy jeans and flipflops, people who were just dirty, people who clearly considered this an occasion to work on their tans, guys wearing tank tops with hairy back sticking out and big hairy gut hanging out under their shirts. There was zero sense that they were seeing something magnificent, important, glorious. There was no impression that they should dress in their Sunday best to do honor and show gratitude to their new Marines.

Call me an old prude, but I was disgusted at the general lack of reverence. It was hard not to feel bad for the young Marines who were so splendidly turned out, so perfectly-disciplined and rehearsed, had worked so terribly hard and achieved so much, and now were preparing to give everything to their nation. A sense of gratitude, at the least, might impel a decent person to honor their effort with a demeanor of respect.

This has nothing to do with money and everything to do with attitude. You can dress nicely no matter how broke you are. You just do your best, make sure your clothes are clean and neat, and don't sit in the stands with your shirt pulled up to your armpits so that your fat hairy gut gets more tanned. Believe me, I have nothing to spend on good clothes, and every item I wore, including the lovely Brooks Brothers suit, came straight from Goodwill ($14.95 + old person's discount + Tuesday discount).

And the same goes for church. Don't go there with half your ass cheek hanging out below your super-short shorts. God is not going to believe you're there to worship Him if you're shakin' it at the boys.

Nothing offends you. Check.

And you like non sequitors. Check.

And of course you are wrong. I have no need for butt cleavage when I am out eating at a restaurant. I just don’t make the leap from bad taste to lack of moral character as you do.

And I’m sorry, but you have not come close to making the case yet. Sorry.

With all due respect, your pictures are exceptions. Music concerts and Occupy protests are not normative indicators of mainstream dress, regardless of how those specific instances correlate with immoral behavior.

With returned respect, I disagree - strenuously.

It makes my eyes roll when peers show up for work in shorts, sandals and t-shirts.

And the impact to their software engineering is what? Are you a better software engineer BECAUSE of your attire?

The best code I ever wrote back in the day was written wearing jeans and a t shirt.

dfwgator People still dressed well during The Great Depression.

Yes they did. In the films of the soup lines, the tent cities, the car-camping fields, etc., the men dressed like they were ready to start work at any minute.

It’s not poverty. You can get very handsome clothes, new with tags still on them, at Goodwill and the Salvation Army. You can buy handsome things on Ebay, also new with tags.

You are making the false case that these people attending protest and deranged concerts only dress as such for these events, when the case is that THIS IS THEIR NORMAL DRESS.

THIS IS THEIR NORMAL DRESS.

All of them? At best the counterculture represented a tiny sliver of the population and many of them were what was called "weekend hippies" who had regular jobs with regular dress codes during the week and only "flew their freak flag" on weekends.

Yes they were influential in affecting fashion and dress for the broader culture. But I don't think that was nearly as much a matter of morality than simply the fact that the rest of the culture looked at them and (as several posters have pointed out up-thread) decided to start dressing comfortably. We ought to be careful not to equate morality with uncomfortable dress. By the same token, we certainly cannot equate morality with comfortable attire either.

I remember when I saw James Cameron’s Titanic movie, (whether or not it’s a good movie is another matter, but it contained about two hours of people in beautiful Edwardian clothing,) and I came out of the theater and it was like I’d gone back in time and then returned. I looked at all the people in the theater parking lot, in their sweats, flip-flops, ripped jeans, flabby stomachs hanging out, etc., etc., and suddenly they all looked so ugly and sloppy to me.

I share your sentiments, but you shouldn't be surprised if many here do not. For many nowadays, dressing like a slob, and/or declining to "dress up," no matter the occasion, is viewed somehow as integral to their "personal freedom."

I'm not too impressed with "conservative" men who won't take off their hats indoors, even when sitting down to eat, but maybe that's just me being an old fogey.

I know I wore a suit and tie to every rock concert I’ve attended. Never been to an OWS rally, but I’d probably break out the 3 piece for a protest.

Proudly an “old fogey” with ya, if it means being dignified at dignified events.

Rock concerts and ows rallies are hardly dignified events. Why bring them into the equation?

But to say that it is declining morality, that really is a bit of a reach.

The trend toward excessively casual clothing does reflect a declining morality because so often "casual" equals "deliberately revealing." When women are bouncing around with no bras, nipples sticking up, when skirts are so short that a crotch shot is likely, when shorts are so short that the lower half of one's butt hangs down, when men wear bike shorts so tight that one can see their religion, this is not just casual, relaxed clothing; this is a deliberate effort to display one's sexual equipment. And that is definitely due to a declining morality. It's hard to argue that a woman who is walking around on the street or in church with her breasts falling out of an insubstantial top or a man with his shirt off inappropriately is being moral in that environment.

The other day, I watched a game of my Tigers v. Cardinals in the 1968 World Series.

One could not miss the well dressed fans. Some long white gloves on the ladies, and almost every man in a brimmed hat, white shirt, tie and many sport coats.

People still dressed well during The Great Depression.

Not everyone did . My grandparents wore custom tailored clothing , they did not lack anything .

My husbands grandmother barely had enough to eat and wore what basically amounted to rags . Her father died at that time and her mother had to raise 5 little girls alone working the midnight shift as a nurse - no welfare , no food stamps , no help what so ever .

My husbands other grandparents lived on a farm they ate well but had no money to by any fancy clothing because they raised 20 children only 4 of which were their own . The other 16 were little babies that people abandoned because they could not even feed them.

It's very simple at that time people used everything they had till it could not be used anymore. What you wore depended a lot on what you had before the bottom fell out . If you lived on a farm you had little use for wearing a suit daily .
