French cuffs, suit-appropriate ties and no coloured shirts in the evening. Its a safe, understated dress codebut maybe not the one youd expect from hockey commentator Don Cherry.
Cherry agreed to share the following sartorial wisdom for our Book of Lists, so long as it was reproduced verbatim. What follows are his top 10 fashion tips, in his own words:
When people think of me and my clothes, they think of the wild jackets that I wear on Coachs Corner, and they are very disappointed when they see me in a sensible suit. I have one set of clothes for TV and another for ordinary use, and here are my 10 tips on clothes:
1. Suits and Jackets always pressed.
2. Shoes always shined and shoe trees put in to keep their shape.
3. Long socks never to show flesh, pulled tight, no sag (the sock, that is ).
4. When hanging a suit or jacket, proper hangers a must to fit suit properly, and space between suits to breathe.
5. Appropriate ties. When I wear one of my wild jackets, always a plain tie. Dont try to gild the lily, and always a single Windsor.
6. Shirts hand pressed, never to laundry to ruin, and heavily starched. Bleached occasionally and only worn once, and always French cuffs with monogrammed initials (in case I get lost).
7.Never wear a colored shirt at night, only daytime.
8. When wearing a striped shirt, only a plain tie.
9. Pants: a small break at the shoe, not sloppy or too short as if you have a flood in your basement, and always with braces that match.
10. Finally, Ron MacLean and I when travelling always wear a shirt and tie with our suits. Look around the airports next time, you seldom see anyone wearing a shirt and tie, you will see most men wear an open neck collar with their suits. Thats because its comfortable and feels good, but thats not for me, because as my Dad and Fernando used to say, Its better to look good than feel good.
I think he makes his own clothes. No reputable tailor would be a ream of cloth just to make one suit that only Cherry would wear.
Yes, and he likely shops at upholstery stores.
From WKRP in Cincinnati:
GUARD IN LOBBY
Where’d you get a jacket like that? I mean, do they sell them somewhere?
HERB TARLEK
Of course, they sell them somewhere.
GUARD IN LOBBY
Where?
HERB TARLEK
Yeah. I tell you, you tell somebody else, pretty soon the whole world is dressing like me.
He looks like an old lady’s couch.
I don’t get this guy. The suits look like something I’d see draped over a homeless person sleeping on a street in New York City, but the shirts with the high white collars really look sharp on him.
11. Never wear clothing that might be mistaken for Liberace’s shower curtain.
No reputable tailor would let that material in his/her shop! I feel scarred just for having seen it...
Really? I think he looks awesome! I’ve never heard of the guy until right this minute - I’m assuming he’s some sort of sportscaster? (Oh, Hockey. Don’t watch it, other than the occasional college game.)
But I will never forget him, LOL! LOVE the blue floral suit with the white rose in the lapel and the shades.
He must look spectacular in just a plain black tux! :)
He would damned sure stand out in the swamp!
Grapes is awesome. he used to coach the bruins...my dad and friends had season tickets behind the bench. Occasionally Grapes would turn around and reply to some of our ‘suggestions’ ...it was hilarious!
